Bahamians and BPL must strongly consider solar energy. Every new construction should be required to have a minimum solar system that can power a fridg, tv and basic lighting. The system should be tied into the grid so that when the house occupants are mostly away during the daytime, the excess energy their system produces can be used to reduce the load on BPL. Persons who can afford to should be encouraged to install even larger solar systems and ‘sell’ excess power to BPL. In the US the plan is to totally eliminate gas powered vehicles in 10-15 years. And home will be designed not only with charging systems to power vehicles but vehicles to power homes in the event are f police wee outages. My prediction is that eventually vehicles built for countries like The Bahamad will be imbedded with solar panels in the roof hood and trunk top. These vehicles will not only be able to charge themselves when parked during the sunlight hours, but can feed power back to homes or businesses when there is a power outage. Imagine every vehicle parked at LPIA over a long holiday weekend connected and feeding power into the grid. Instead of getting a $40-50 ticket for parking when they return, the vehicle owners get a $10-$29 rebate for their home electricity bill. Imagine how much this will cut down on power outages even.
I guess they forgot it was only the mask mandate that fell off. Other protocols like hand sanitizer, social distancing and crowd restrictions are still in place. Some people say they didn’t feel comfortable in the mall and some food stores on the weekend because even as the masks came off, some places were extra crowded , even with children and toddlers running around. So older folks and persons with reservations may prefer to do their shopping on week days rather than weekends. Covid is not yet fully gone.
Is it? Didn’t the police intervene on another murder taking place? And didn’t they attempt to prevent the perpetrator from inflicting another fatal blow with an axe?
Single parents is nothing new to The Bahamas and neither are teen age parents. So what has changed? There are single parents on many Family Islands but not half the crime and deadly violence like New Providence. The key factor is family structures still exist on the Family Islands as well as community structures. Even when a child is the product of absent fathers, uncles or someone in the community steps up and fills the role. Many times cousins are raised in the same home as brothers and sisters and some do not know until l they become adults that the man who raised them as a father was really their uncle. . . Another factor is diet. Many households where a lot of violence is happening do not cook on a regular basis. The main diet is chicken and fries, or burgers. No fresh fruit or vegetables. A psychologist indicated recently on a talk show that persons who follow a diet of mostly meat ( chicken in this instance) tend to develop predator characteristics. They are more prune to violence and has less tolerance. Minnis idea to introduce a lunch program in the schools was an excellent one. Though expensive. Maybe it can be scaled for every student to receive a serving of fresh fruit or milk every day. . . Then there is the issue of substance abuse, including alcohol and marijuana. Many Bahamian males start using these substances, alcohol and marijuana in their mid teens. A leading psychologist is if the opinion that these substances stunt the growth of the brain. Many young men, he claims have a undeveloped brain that is made even worse with an improper diet. This is evidence even more when heavy drug users and persons in their mid 20’s look years older than their counterparts who do not drink or smoke. When someone is murdered or killed and the police has to be called for murder it is much too late.
One mechanism used to curb inflation is to reduce spending, but only to the point of not purchasing essential goods and services and switching to cheaper substitutes. Any reduced spending, will lead to a corresponding decrease in employment and if prices do not come down it can lead to stagflation. That is where the economy becomes stagnant but inflation still abounds. Since most of the factors that are driving inflation are external to tThe Bahamas, the last thing the Davis government needs to do is take drastic measures ad send the economy into recession. The circumstances are unusual because even though consumers in the US are cutting back and postponing the purchase of non essential items, the economy is still bustling. Not only are there still employment opportunities, but workers are now demanding and receiving record wages . Davis was right in advising consumers to prepare for hard times because the economic bubble can burst anytime.
The CDC has some time ago distanced itself from the vaccinating of children. despite the hiccups, the event attracted several thousand people to Grand Bahama and created economic activity put money in the pockets of hundreds of Grand Bahamians who would of otherwise been idle. And overall, the event was a success, despite The Bahamas placing SIXTH on the medals count.
Is the problem with Grand Bahama or was it with the GBPA? A lot of the companies you listed were doing activities that were either banned in the US or severely restricted. And when some ceased their operations, a lot of health issues on Grand Bahama disappeared.
