January is gone, a month to mobilize and three to four months to completion. So the earliest possible date Bah Mar can open is JUNE. Then when the legal wrangling starts, this can create even further delays vis a vis injunctions and estopples. Maybe its time ***not***to rely on Bah Mar as the economic savior of this country and try to develop other economic activities.
The olympics in Rio is in jeopardy. The fear is persons attending the event taking back mosquitoes or mosquito lavae bearing the virus back to their home countries..thus making the ZIKA a worldwide threat.
They had that big citrus farm on Abaco. Then they told them the farm was infected with canker and everything had to be burned and destroyed. The owners packed up and left. Now the country has to import citrus.
If the government continues to make these fees too expensive and compliance too burdensome the compliance rate will decrease and not increase. Not only that but companies that want to comply will have to close when they can no longer afford to. This government is trying to tax its way into prosperity when things should be the other way around. Reduce taxes to stimulate and grow the economy.
One of these days I will reveal the real and true underlying cause of most of this crime in the Bahamas and other Caribbean countries. In the main time read the Kissinger Report and see if it points any fingers at anyone...anyone?
Can someone please explain why BEC has to float bonds when its major expense, fuel, has gone down by, so should go down be at least 70%? BEC should be able to write off the amount of their liabilities in a year or, two, reduce its consumer bills by 40-60% (by reducing then removing the surcharge) and still have funds to replace and upgrade its power plant over the next two years. And once it installs more fuel efficient and alternative forms of generation and allows for consumers to feed into the grid the savings should be even greater. The world will not see any $100 plus per barrel oil for at least 20 years and oil may be below $20.00 a barrel before June. PLEASE let long suffering Bahamian consumers benefit from world conditions.
Just when one had the confidence that we were going to make it thru January with only 4 murders, the amount almost doubles overnight! These killers no longer have fear of anything or anyone.. They just do what they like, when they like. But the murders should not overshadow the other crimes and social deterioration that is going on in this country, New Providence especially. Have you seen videos on social media with the number of cars that have been stolen? This is sickening if not a national disgrace to happen in this small island. And while a number of them have been recovered, it is just a crying shame to see how these thieves take brand new vehicles in the back of the bush and strip them down to a skeleton. Obviously stolen car parts is big business. Persons are making a killing off the parts. And the number of persons having their cars broken into and having personal items stolen or having batteries and spare tires stolen off their vehicles. Then the number of home invasion and how brutal and deadly they are becoming, or the number of persons being personally attacked and assaulted and robbed and injured when the attackers do not find sufficient loot. We are in it up to our necks. Pray Bahamas!
It is not a matter of talking negativity but observing all the clear indicators that the country's economy is shrinking. And, despite this, government continues to saddle Bahamians and businesses alike with additional taxes. Yet the national debt continues to grow. So the concern is real. At least the US is able to benefit from increased employment, lower prices and a better quality of life. But even then all is not well. Consumers aren't spending. For the first time in modern history there were no cargo ships in transit between the Eastern and Western worlds. Commerce came to a standstill for several weeks. Walmart is closing stores. In fact Walmart forced the only other food store in a town out of business now it is closing its store in that town leaving the residents without a grocery store. This government needs to stimulate the economy by offering tax breaks to encourage investment and employment. And yes get crime under control.
Part of the US anti-gang strategy was to take known gang members out of their prisons and deport them back to their home county. Many of them were sent back to South America. Unfortunately many of the receiving countries were ill prepared to deal with gang members and the violence they engage in. Some of these countries saw their murder rate double and triple in just a few years after the gang members were returned. Unfortunately here most of the gang members are Bahamian so there is no other country to ship them off to. Gangs thrive on violence and murder, as statistics indicate. So an anti crime strategy must include an anti gang strategy and an anti gun plan. Gangs recruit even in the 8 and 9 graders in schools. Gang members earn stripes by committing serious crimes. The most serious being murder.. It would be interesting to see what strategy the FBI suggests because gangs also thrive in and take over prisons. Since there is no capital punishment the problem the country will face in a few years is obvious.
