Several nights after they claimed the fire out the Western part of new providence was covered in smoke. Those operating the city dump claimed the smoke wasn't theirs but was coming from another property. Now they are admitting the dump is on fire. What a sham! Why are taxpayers money being spent to contract so called professionals and yet we face the same problems? This fire has caused local residents thousands of dollars in doctor visits, in days missed from school or work and not to mention the level of misery and discomfort from having to inhale garbage-drenched smoke 24 hours a day.

This is the fourth or maybe fifth young man who was,"apparently " armed and still lost his life in an ambush. This is at leash the 20th high profile or young man of status to be killed in a year. When will enough be enough?

John says...

This just goes to prove that if someone wants you dead in this country, there's little or nothing you can do to stop can do to stop them. The pepertrator will always have the element of surprise and even arming yourself is useless. The only thing that may help is swift justice and harsh sentencing. Murder is becoming engrained in our culture so much so that is now an everyday occurance. Young men are joining gangs not realizing it is near impossible to get out and live. A country cannot prosper when so many young men are being murdered and just as many more are turning into heartless, cold blooded murderers.

Sometimes you must be "aware". When listening to these talk shows. Not only is there a lot of misinformation but some hosts and callers have resorted to telling out right lies. I heard one talk show talk about the road works on East Street as the worst he even seen. Even Stevie Wonder could see he lie.

The problem with Junkanoo is junkanooers (along with the crime surge ) killed Junkanoo. Over the past 20 years or so junkanoo became a contest to see who could build the biggest costumes and:or who could attract the largest number of members. Never mind that both of these contributed to the lackluster performance and the decline in spectators. The parades became long, drawn out and boring. Young people don't have Thea kind of time to be to an event that will last 6,7,8 hours. They will watch the main attraction and catch the highlights on their smart phone. Junkanoo needs an "after party " type event. Here's an idea for those who need to steal one : costumes are expensive and to just dump them after what may be just one lap on Bay Street is very wasteful. So why not have a Junkanoo tail gate party and exposition at the stadium starting the day after the Boxing Day parade and running a week after New Years day. Each group can be given a section to display their major costumes and sell souvenirs they can put on scheduled performances , Rush outs etc and taxis can take tourist there as part of a tour. Many persons who participate in Junkanoo don't get a chance to see their competitors. With a small entry charge and concession stands, this can easily raise a hundred thousand dollars plus annually for the groups.

Food for thought: in 1974 Henry Kissinger as chairman of the National Security Council came up with the idea that food could be used as a weapon and to control population growth amongst other things. At that time he felt that population growth outside the U.S. and especially in former British colonies was a threat to national security. Shortly afterward farms started to disappear in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. They were replaced by many fast food chains all over the Caribbean and almost a total dependence on food being imported from the United States. One of the latest farm casualties in the Bahamas was a high yielding citrus farm in Abaco that was claimed to be infected with the citrus canker. Every tree on that farm was burned and the site abandoned. Records will show what happened to the health of Bahamians after their diet was changed to a less natural one. Was there also behavior modification? Like people becoming more violent. One fast food chain is famous for promoting its "angry whopper" and breast cancer has been linked to certain steroids found in chicken. There is also the question of what effect foods loaded with female hormones have on the black male and his ability to reproduce (male potency has declined significantly over the past 30 years) How safe is our food supply? Can it ever be safe again?

Some people cannot understand the need have an international star headline Junkanoo Carnival as opposed to local talent. Beyoncé has a fan base of over 67 million. Usher fans are around 55 million and Janet Jackson has a fan base of around 13 million. The only local Bahamian group that has a fan base of over 1 million is Bah Men. So if this event is to draw the Numbers needed to make it successful then it has to engage an international. but what needs to be done is to expose and showcase local talent and Junkanoo as a festival so that in 3-5 years out you will have persons coming for Junkanoo or for KB or whoever else.
