***not*** to purchases items like stoves and refrigerators and even clothing now because come January 1, duties on these items will be reduced and the prices will go down. Didn't something in this dim wit head click and tell him that hundreds of businesses depend on holiday sales to break even? And to clear out inventory they may have been carrying for an entire year? Didn't this dummy sit back and think that if he encourages consumers to 'boycott' holiday sales, these businesses will still not be able to bring in new inventory on January 1, and will not bring new goods until they sell off their existing inventory? Does the government not know that most businesses carry up to 90 days inventory and it takes even longer to sell durable goods like automobiles and stoves and refrigerators..yet they have a dummy in the press telling people to hold off on their purchases until January 1. When the duties are reduced it will be up to six months before consumers see reduced prices in some stores..even longer if Greg Bethel continues on his campaign telling consumers to boycott holiday sales! The government showed very little, if any, consideration for retailers implementing the VAT in this fashion.
That is how we got here in the first place. Despite the selected few paying their taxes, most of the 6 billion national debt did not benefit Bahamians directly. During the years when the country was going through periods of economic boom, consecutive governments continued borrowing like it was no body's business. Most of that money went to projects that benefitted the foreign investor and much of it was squandered, at least unaccounted for, as far as there being value received for money. Now the government is turning to 350, 000 (less their selected cronies and carpet baggers)) to pay off this debt. Don't worry about the 'O its only 7.5% VAT and a 5% increase in the cost of living. Once they get the VAT train up and rolling and find out where the economic activity is and the persons who hold wealth, the tax will increase. Look out for a 30% VAT in 3 years if the economy does not rebound. Maybe even 50%!
Didn't the McSweeny brothers (lawyer and accountant) pull another dirty deed that left someone who was in partnership with another of their kin being left responsible for a million plus dollar loan that was supposed to be the joint responsibility of the person and their kin? Something to do with a radio station.
THE major press kept quiet about this for sometime. When the Punch was reporting on it persons were skeptical to believe that things were that bad because the other newspapers kept quiet. Now the mud has hit the fan and shareholders stand to lose hundreds of thousands. Christie removed the two directors who were protesting how the bank was being operating so now we are left with the dirty dozen..Paul McSweeney included. Does anyone in the PLP feel shame for scandal after scandal after scam? That building on JFK millions is likely to be pocketed while the Bahamian people are being saddled with more taxes.
There are people who are suffering beyond description. They are innocent people, they didn't bring this upon themselves. They are the victims of the sins of other people. And while it's hard to see, it's important to understand that these people exist.

The truth is that killing innocent people is always wrong - and no argument or excuse, no matter how deeply believed, can ever make it right. No religion on earth condones the killing of innocent people; no faith tradition tolerates the random killing of our brothers and sisters on this earth.
