All of the comments against WTO are wrong or misleading. The data does not support Mr Roberts or the anti-WTO activists. None of their fears is realistic. By 2028, The Bahamas will be the only country in the entire world not in WTO. The cost of doing business with the rest of the world will increase substantially. Local entrepreneurs could find more barriers to international trade. Becoming a global tech hub would encur challenges. The government will not be forced to implement the world-class standards that will ultimately benefit all. Foreign Direct Investment could slow down with better options from others. The numerous disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. It is always better to have a seat at the table than be the meal on it. We need to look at the big picture than being concerned about small petty stuff.
There is nothing wrong with giving concessions. Every country in the world does it. We ought to be happy to be getting these investments at this time. There is no concession available to foreigners that are not available to Bahamians. Some times we have to stop looking for the bad in everything. Since the last election, we have seen more local and foreign investment in the country than in any other comparable period of time.
I hope they end up completely getting rid of the Blue Hills power station. It is old, expensive to operate, full of pollution, an eyesore to homes in Blue Hill Heights and noise pollution to homes in Blue Hills Estates.
The money will not go to the government and end up in the consolidated fund. It will go to NHI directly similar to how NIB is set up. The plan is already in place for prescription drugs and no pharmacist is complaining about payment. It is also already in place for primary care with 43,000 people already enrolled. None of the private doctors are complaining about getting paid. This plan is about expanding the services to include test and surgery. We 380,000 customers and $100 million in the pool. It is a win/win for everyone.
Seems like none of you read the plan. It is better for them to make $20 from 100 customers than to charge $100 for their current 1 customer. Everyone will make a substantially larger amount at the end of the day, they just have to work harder. In The Bahamas, insurance companies make three times more profit than comparative other countries. We have to fix the system for the benefit of everyone.
I find this absolutely amazing. These two clowns fought to the end to avoid the Public Accounts Committee and totally discredit the Auditor General in the process. Now that the truth has come out and they put their tails between their legs. Those two clowns need to be removed in the interest of public trust.
