That letter of Dec 21, 2020 is such a joke. Does anyone remember when the lady who was in charge of Central Bank back in the day when Bank of the Bahamas was undergoing all of its problems (like less than 10 years ago) kept writing letter and letter. it was then revealed in a further article some months along in the process that the Central Bank could actually do nothing about anything - that Parliament or something had to act upon the recommendations. It is a Central Bank with no teeth whatsoever (unless of course if you are just an ordinary poor Bahamian caught obtaining US currency without permission - then you go to jail). The big boys get letters.
An extremely similar article appeared 24 hours ago and I gave my opinion of the reason why Freeport and Abaco cannot be allowed to prosper. I was replied to that it was the silliest comment every heard, so I will not repeat it. Everyone knows the history of Freeport, the GBPA, and the AIM movement in Abaco years ago. Everyone remembers the country within a country speech. Everyone knows what makes those economies tick and why the 1973 government (which continues today) opposes their success. No need to repeat it here.
The article claims that the Tribune contacted an "Atlantis spokesman". If he is indeed a spokesman, how come he doesn't have a name?
This is simply another kick in the teeth to Bahamians while they are down on their knees. The younger generation (those under 50) have fought back against these injustices by reducing the number of children they have, so that there are not so many slaves available to the massa and thus wages can be kept high. However, the government has responded by allowing cheap labour from abroad to not only enter the country and work, but also obtain free land (if they have a work permit) and still obtain free land (and turn a blind eye) if they do not.
So either your children agree to work for peanuts or the government will bring in slaves from worse off plantations who think that our plantation is a paradise. The Bahamas is known the world over as a paradise - what a joke.
Wonder why the spokesman chose to give no reason for this change, neither did the Tribune ask the union guy what the letter said regarding the need for the change? What would stop the hotel (or any hotel) from just saying that gratuities need to split 50/50 with the hotel in order to cover the costs of Covid? I mean why can't they just do anything they feel like? In response Bahamians "need to just be grateful to have a job".
Suicide is such a taboo subject in this country, that there is no way to discuss it using reasoning and thought. Interesting how the counselor seemed to avoid making any connection to the loneliness of the holidays. I guess the Nashville bomber didn't realize the date was the 25th either.
When are people going to understand - there are simply too many white people on Grand Bahama and in Abaco. Many would prefer that VAT be raised to 50% rather than allow those two islands to contribute to the Treasury.
Anyone who invests money in Grand Bahama before the Princess Hotel road is re-opened has got to be one big fool.
Yes the information is where you pointed - but it is never on the nightly news. You don't see this on CNN or other major news sources - so it may as well not exist. The general public think what they find on TV.
If a tree falls in the forest and CNN is not around, does it make a sound? No it does not.
I agree with stillwaters. These tourists trying to come here and steal our treasure - just like the pirates of old. Pindling said we have our birthright - and we sure do - and we don't need nothing else. The Competent Authority will provide us with food and water and he will stop the landlords from kicking us out. We don't need nothing else. He is competent and he is the MOST Honorable.
Wait though. One thing. If yinnah set in foreign could Fedex us some new domino game, we gah be just alright.

Sure ... they could take the money "saved" and spend it on extra police and extra shifts to tackle robberies. I suppose that could work.

I think somebody needs to tell Dion that we've been a "glimmer of our former selves" since around 1990.
