Over five hundred years ago a European landed on this pristine island bringing disease and death in the form of the influenza virus. Now, in modern times, once again Europe sends a new strain of virus from the UK to threaten. In the interim, black-listings and threats of black-listings have taken place year after year. When will Europe stop its assault on our peaceful nation?
Now the government is reaping the results of its idiotic decision not to exempt Freeport from VAT back in 2014. The constant bickering with the Port Authority has also yielded no fruit. Its ongoing entanglements with China, well, my pen could run out of ink on that one. When one compares the economy of Freeport in the 1970s and 1980s with what is there today ... maybe that country within a country speech wasn't such a good idea? It seems they changed their mind anyway, because Abaco seems to be developing a country within a country (several of them).
That letter of Dec 21, 2020 is such a joke. Does anyone remember when the lady who was in charge of Central Bank back in the day when Bank of the Bahamas was undergoing all of its problems (like less than 10 years ago) kept writing letter and letter. it was then revealed in a further article some months along in the process that the Central Bank could actually do nothing about anything - that Parliament or something had to act upon the recommendations. It is a Central Bank with no teeth whatsoever (unless of course if you are just an ordinary poor Bahamian caught obtaining US currency without permission - then you go to jail). The big boys get letters.
An extremely similar article appeared 24 hours ago and I gave my opinion of the reason why Freeport and Abaco cannot be allowed to prosper. I was replied to that it was the silliest comment every heard, so I will not repeat it. Everyone knows the history of Freeport, the GBPA, and the AIM movement in Abaco years ago. Everyone remembers the country within a country speech. Everyone knows what makes those economies tick and why the 1973 government (which continues today) opposes their success. No need to repeat it here.
The article claims that the Tribune contacted an "Atlantis spokesman". If he is indeed a spokesman, how come he doesn't have a name?
This is simply another kick in the teeth to Bahamians while they are down on their knees. The younger generation (those under 50) have fought back against these injustices by reducing the number of children they have, so that there are not so many slaves available to the massa and thus wages can be kept high. However, the government has responded by allowing cheap labour from abroad to not only enter the country and work, but also obtain free land (if they have a work permit) and still obtain free land (and turn a blind eye) if they do not.
So either your children agree to work for peanuts or the government will bring in slaves from worse off plantations who think that our plantation is a paradise. The Bahamas is known the world over as a paradise - what a joke.
Wonder why the spokesman chose to give no reason for this change, neither did the Tribune ask the union guy what the letter said regarding the need for the change? What would stop the hotel (or any hotel) from just saying that gratuities need to split 50/50 with the hotel in order to cover the costs of Covid? I mean why can't they just do anything they feel like? In response Bahamians "need to just be grateful to have a job".
Suicide is such a taboo subject in this country, that there is no way to discuss it using reasoning and thought. Interesting how the counselor seemed to avoid making any connection to the loneliness of the holidays. I guess the Nashville bomber didn't realize the date was the 25th either.

I hate to think I may have no food to eat after government suspends its social programs at the end of March, as was recently suggested.
