I agree with many of your points, however a Harcourt Curriculum is not the answer. This is not rocket science, the foundations of literacy and numeracy can be taught using a Bahamiancentric curriculum. What we lack are resources. What we have in abundance are overcrowded classrooms full of children who can learn if reached. We need more innovative and engaging programming. We also need social programs that ensure children are not hungry and can focus on what is being taught. This complex issue is something that has to be dealt with or there is certain death for the future Bahamas.

The fact remains that in The Bahamas mediocrity is prized. Lionel Sands needs to go, and anyone else who is high up in the Ministry of Education who have no new ideas for the country and continue to practice this insanity. Throw up your hands and blame someone else! That is the way we like it in The Bahamas.
Education Reform is a dirty word in this country. For over a decade we have had the same abysmal results and the same people running the show. No new ideas, no desperate attempts to save the nation's youth. For some myopic reason this is not a priority for any government, we are in a bad place and it's only going to get worse if there is no revolution of thought.

Thank you to the letter writer. For too long we have allowed children to have children. We have not properly socialized or educated our people to practice safe sex. I see it in my own family and it is a plague, a vicious cycle set to repeat itself for eternity if we do do not step in and change the mindset of this country. The wild animals are taking over, and they have little, save the huge chip on their shoulder. We must flood The Bahamas with condoms and messages of safe sex. Abstinence is a joke, protection is key. Sex education is paramount. Until we get serious about these things, 25 year old girls will be on their 8th child and by the age of 40 they will be Great Grandmothers. And not a Daddy in sight. Weeping for this country, we have so much potential and it is being lost daily.

This hits close to home for me. I am sorry that any child has been touched inappropriately at school or home. The facts show that you cannot supervise children 100% of the time on any day in any school. What we need are more age appropriate talks from K-3 straight on thru. We love the knee-jerk reaction in The Bahamas, let's try being proactive for once. I'm torn up about seeing this in the paper, but happy that things have not been swept under the rug again.

Yes indeed... This is nothing but spin.

While we're asking... Who killed Harry Oakes??

Jonahbay says...

John, I usually agree with you in your statements. However this is an off colour statement if you ask me. First of all, your second sentence contradicts your first. Equal rights for men and women will also lend itself to gays and lesbians because they are human first. I can't believe that in 2015 any person educated or uneducated would even think it was okay to mutter under their breath that men and women should not be equal because that will help gays be equal and we don't want that so let's keep this as it is. This is about human rights, if gays are humans then so be it. Myopia is killing The Bahamas. Let the next generation decide if they want gay marriage. Let this generation decide if they want men and women to be equal. Stay focused!

When I read these type stories, I always think wow, sounds too good to be true... Then as usual, nothing happens because FOCOL has to get their cut and all the greasy wheels turn and what is best for the country never sees the light of day. Why is it that we have many educated people from The Bahamas and we never hear of a legitimate Bahamian company bidding. Instead we get Perry's son running a pool company and Brave's son running a landscaping business. They don't know squat about any of those things! Where are the Bahamian electrical engineers??

I like your thinking!

Men and women should be equal-full stop. I want to pass my citizenship on to my child no matter who I marry and where I live. I don't want to be discriminated against because I am female. If men and women were equal in our constitution we might not be so backward. Man I am starting to cry for The Bahamas. This pimple of a country with such potential for greatness but stuck in a timewarp It seems. Men and women should be equal - full stop. Let's make that happen and then talk about Gay marriage. And just a heads up, men and women who are gay will benefit from equal rights in the constitution, but only because they are men and women first.
