This is a great career choice for men and women. The Maritime industry opens up a vast amount of opportunities for Bahamians and Non-Bahamians that have a passion for being on vessels, and for those that naturally understand the navigation of the ocean.

Born and Raised. Also we're not discussing at the moment how other countries have been benefited from roads and infrastructure! Road and infrastructure is not guaranteed. Focus on the Bahamas. The Bahamas speaks for itself. Lets see the bigger picture here for once! We have all suffered. S Eleuthera is not the first! Everyone has been wheeling and dealing and still we have nothing to show for. Long term thinking is right way.

MaryMack53 says...

Though Eleuthera's economy is dead, its beauty and mystery should be protected. Why not take a more sustainable route? Eco friendly hotel or wildlife University? There are more creative approaches to developing Eleuthera. Disney is well established and can exploit another island in the Caribbean that is desperate. The Bahamas isn't the place!
This port development should stay in Nassau. Prince George Wharf needs a makeover and that should be made a priority. Also, if this Disney deal see's the light of day. There is no guarentee these tourists will spend any money to help build Eleuthera economy and destroy this island.

MaryMack53 says...

There is no doubt we can benefit from privatisation of the port. It would be the smartest move. Now is the time to partner with the more experienced. This would not be the first time our country has greatly benefited economically from improved infrastructure projects. Nassau Container Port and LPIA have become much better organized and more profitable hubs due to privatization. Now is the time for change, but it needs to be done in the right way.

MaryMack53 says...

No one can deny that Eleuthera is in desperate need of economic stimulation. Those vessels should really be directed to Nassau port where we already have the capacity to handle them. This is one of the major reasons why the Nassau port needs to be improved urgently. Lets hope D'Aguilar follows through with the RFP process quickly.

Lets try to see the bigger picture here. What is the issue with having some foreign investors? There is nothing wrong with a strong business plan suitable for this property. The only big name company thats showing interest is Disney and I would rather the cruise lines utilize the space that they already have access to "Prince George Wharf." We can both agree that cruise ship docks needs complete renovation and modernization.
Mr. Ferreira is being very careful not to commit. He knows the value of the land. Open your mind before opening your mouth so quickly. Do some research on Eco Tourism and Foreign Investors. Don't let hearsay manipulate your thoughts.

MaryMack53 says...

Everyone can benefit from this project - small businesses, investors, etc. I would rather see thousands of Bahamian investors hands in the cookie jar instead 50. I believe $55 million is not enough to turn the port and downtown core around. A cultural village is not enough of differentiating factor to win a bid of this magnitude, that could be easily duplicated. We need to see more numbers from this group.

On Bahamian group in cruise port proposal

I am always completely embarrassed when I drive downtown or walk by the Wharf, watching cruise ship passengers move through the dingy downtown core in the hot sun. Not to mention the long walk to and from Junkanoo Beach. We must do better! That's the reason why the port is in the poor state that it's in now - everybody so worried about who might get the deal that our infrastructure, like everything else, is left to fall apart, costing us all millions of dollars a year. This group seems to bringing a lot to the table. Let's compare the other proposal, see what ther options come through the RFP process and may the best group win!

I agree with you...we need to see what the other consortium has put forward to keep the transparency going and see which deal would be best for the Bahamian people. Why was information only published on one of the deals?
