Why should we pay $200 for the continuing incompetence of the Bahamian Government and many of the employees who seem to forever be away from their desks, on vacation, having lunch or on sick leave. I have been waiting for my National Insurance pension for over 9 months after official retirement and this just illustrates the mind set of many government employees.
The writing is on the wall even though it will take a few years for Cuba to meet the demand. Why would you come on a cruise to Nassau only to find Bay street shut down after 5.30 pm notwithstanding the derelict shops at each end. Cuba has mountains, rivers, historical buildings, and history that will draw many of the impulse visitors to the Bahamas. By the way Cuba is cheaper than the Bahamas but not as cheap as people think.
One only has to have dealings with the Ministry of Health ,Ministry of Education or National Insurance to realize the gross inefficiency and time wasted with the simplest of tasks. I am sure that this work (or lack of it) ethic extends into all aspects of this Hotel debacle. Added to which the Prime ministers outburst is an International disgrace. Think what you may but do not make it public.
Was Minnis ever invited to discuss this project before the crisis, of course not. Now that there are problems suddenly we want to involve the opposition. Wondering why this project never had competent supervisors reporting at regular intervals to the Government, after all this poor workmanship and falling behind deadlines didn't happen overnight.
As a retired expat teacher who has taught in the Bahamian system for many years it has to be obvious to any intelligent person that there exists a totally dysfunctional educational system. The director is on another planet and lies constantly, the Minister is not interested in making any positive changes and after 25 + years the MOE is still incapable of producing a BGCSE without help from Cambridge in the UK. Furthermore the Minister and his close nit colleagues continue to play with Bahamian children's education by employing Cuban teachers who for the most part cannot be understood by students. Technical education--what a joke when little technology ever trickles down to the family islands .Additionally whilst there are some dedicated young Bahamian teachers many are undisciplined, absent often and work simply for a paycheck. Lets be real , this country is very expensive and the Ministers misguide the public into thinking this is the "best little country in the world" when there are so many other destinations which are cheaper and have more to offer. Examples of the bull---t given to the public are such outrageous statements as "the world famous straw market" or "Kalik a world famous beer" . And why are we paying $53 for a case of this "award winning beer" when it is produced here. Bahamian business philosophy is make as much as you can in the shortest period of time and to hell with value for money.
Some of the above comments defy commonsense. This not about pushing the envelope or being top of the class its about having an emergency vehicle available at a minutes notice. Whether it is used frequently or not has nothing to do with it.
Having seen recent photographs of the state of this hotel just prior to the soft opening I am amazed that any reasonably competent individual could have EVER have slated this place to open in time. Typical PLP inefficiency with the public being lied to again and again.
