Remember this when you hear the excuse that there is no money. When the peasants are losing their jobs and wages are being cut. Check in to see if the Government officials will take a proportional pay cut as well. If you want to see change make a direct connection between performance and compensation. For example, the Minister of Education's compensation should be substantially connected to the nation's GPA. Set the base wage to minimum wage, after all, they believe it's a livable wage. Then define a bonus scale based on performance milestones.

Other appropriate performance metrics:
Minister of National Security - reduction in gun violence, murders, robberies
Minister of Health - mortality rates, wait times, obesity
Minister of Works - Service reliability (reduction in # of power and water outages), service quality
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs - Case processing rates

Yeah, we don't vote based on the party platform, the leaders' competency and values. It's not like we could hold them accountable for anything. Or have access to the information to do so.

There is money. These politicians and cronies wouldn't be around unless there was. Do you think they would work for free? For charity? For the greater good of the country? lol. But they spread this idea of there being no money and the public accepts that as an excuse for the poor condition of the country. There might be less money but the people feeling that is the common Bahamian. I'd like to see how employment rates in the Government changed compared to the country's employment rate. Or the reduction in wages felt by the Public versus the Government.

Ask yourself this. If the country's GDP drops by 10% shouldn't the salaries of the Government officials be reduced by 10% as it is reflective of their performance? They have the greatest control over the country and should be incentivized to do their job well. Shouldn't the minister of education be compensated based on the average GPA of students? Shouldn't the minister of health be compensated base on wait times and mortality rates? Shouldn't the minister of defense be compensated based on crime rates?

Shouldn't the general public have freedom of information to monitor and hold the government and public servants accountable?

The grass always seems greener on the other side. Elections just give us peasants the feeling of control. In actuality, it's a mechanism to control us. It releases the built-up frustration and resets our capacity while we give the "new" leader a chance. Then we allow the new leadership to blame the old leadership for current issues. Then eventually we don't accept the excuses anymore, a new election occurs and the cycle repeats.

The Bahamas doesn't possess resources and technology superior to the USA to accept and process materials they reject. The only thing we have is less regulation and protection of our environment and people.

These are short-term economic decisions that are reckless for our future. Even if we don't care about the environmental effects what about when our ports are blacklisted because of the risk of ships becoming infested with all of the exotic bugs we've allowed in our country? What resources will we have to sterilize and restore industry confidence in our ports?

At this point, the onus is on us the Public to hold our public service accountable. The BPL fiasco has been happening for decades. Assemble and protest at Rawson Square. Either we fight for a better future or we accept defeat and slip into a coma of apathy and depression. This is not only about BPL but all aspects of the public service sector that has failed us.

We need our Government to acknowledge the precise failures, commit to clear and actionable corrections, assign who is accountable to these actions, and have freedom of information so that the public can monitor progress and hold the Government accountable.

It is outrageous that we allow our leaders to hold power over the people by controlling the information we need to hold them accountable.
