Amazing that we have so many "educated" people who go along with, promote, and get their salary from such a destructive force in our society. This web shop nonsense alone shows how low Bahamian society has gone. But, it will all end soon enough.
Obviously, something is NOT working. We want an easy fix. We have managed to raise too many kids who have no respect and no value for life. Think we can just hold hands and move this country to a better place. Think again. Or, better yet, just start thinking. We need a few adults in the room. Where will they come from?
Did Mr. Bell really say, "I don't remember no other judgements...." and, "When you go up there, you have to make sure that you cross your I’s and dot your T’s. And those cases are not the easiest to solve and prosecute.” Hmmmm. I wonder how there could be any confusion in what is said?
Haven't read the U.S. papers lately? Immigrants are looked upon as drug smugglers, rapists, robbers and scammers. Trump didn't call The Bahamas a shit-hole country directly, but we know what he meant, right? The Statue of Liberty refers to a long gone concept of acceptance and brotherly love. That no longer applies.
The issue begins with the family. We are failing to raise children who are educated and have respect for others. Until we, as a society, admit this and work to correct it, nothing can or will change. You suggest moving the prison to another island. Could I not also suggest we remove some of the children who have no guidance whatsoever from their "families" in Nassau to achieve the next layer of social improvement. Just asking.
The perception is the reality. There was no science here. Knowing is different from believing. Those who claim that the reality is that we are not corrupt, are delusional.
"Christian Council president Bishop Delton Fernander, not known for his theological and intellectual acuity, was typically unhelpful and confusing." While you are correct, dear Front Porch writer, this supposition can be said for much our country's perspective, as well. Look at the comments from birdie. Any less unhinged? And how about Parliament, as a whole? We shun education and enlightenment because our religious beliefs are so out of touch with not just the bible, but reason altogether. You are spot on, however you are preaching to those who do not have the intellectual capacity to see past their noses. We failed to invest in education. We have failed to seek the real truth in our Christian practices. And, this is the result. Sad, hey?
At some point Mr. Russell, it would serve The Bahamas well to realize that our development model, for all of our 50 years, has been wrong. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." suggests that the state of the Bahamas as it currently stands, whereby poverty, social services, crime, environmental issues, the loss of democracy, and other substandard social indicators are directly a result of our development model. There are many ways that our economy could be improved without depending on large anchor projects which funnel the profits from our country into the hands of foreigners and away from our shores. This is a result of political leaders who have no vision for our country and are endlessly greedy. The amazing and bountiful resources we possess, including our natural and human resources have historically gone to the highest bidder. Our leadership, if it can be called that, as we watch the circus called Parliament, seems to rule out any real benefits to The Bahamas and the Bahamian people with its childish behaviour and lack of critical thinking. We seem to lack the imagination to see The Bahamas as anything other than a cookie jar for corrupt politicians and the foreigners whom they woo and cater to. The history of our country makes this abundantly clear, yes? At some point, though I would argue the time is late, we need to focus on sustainable, environmentally friendly, and socially inclusive development models for The Bahamas. Smaller development that can include true local business opportunities of ownership. Not just the low wage jobs that always accompany these large foreign owned projects. At present Mr. Russell, you, along with our political and business leadership have failed to use your imagination to take us forward. In these changing times, we must begin looking forward, not backward. Backward is where we have been headed for far too long. As Dr. Martin Luther King said, "We need a radical revolution of values."
