A better direction of where this country is headed cannot be found. Central bank stops dollar outflows. Web shops make sure people will stay poor and need tax payer assistance. Web shops pay so little tax that it is ridiculous. I am worried that the leaders of this country along with a significant portion of our citizens are just plain ignorant. Is there a nicer way to state this? Nationalize the web shops in this state of emergency. The government, we the people, are going to end up paying part of the the salaries of both the workers and the patrons of this "business" in the very near future anyway.
This issue alone, illustrates a country's collective seriousness. There should be a uniform nationwide chorus of demanding that these shelters are built. Don't blame environmentalists for not bringing money. They are bringing ideas and staying on point. Do we not value teachers? That's what they do too, right? Do we demand teachers bring money to the table? How could we if we don't pay them enough to even support their family? Get real moncur. The problem is that those with the money have only been thinking about money and just don't seem to give a shit about anyone else. How does this reality escape a thinking Christian? What forseeable issue in The Bahamas can we claim that we have been "prepared" for? We don't even prepare for a hurricane until it is on our doorstep. We don't plan ahead as a people. I don't know Darville. But, he is right and should be listened to.
There are two sides to this story, and both of them are rotten to the damned core. Both sides have been expounded on in the article and community comments above. Is there a clearer example of a lose/lose situation for the good people of The Bahamas? This loss to our nation's integrity is as clear as the clearest pane of glass. Do our kids have a future in a country such as this, when the real true problems are only just beginning?
Because no mater where you stand, or who you are related to, or in debt to, we will always look out for our "own closest" first, yes, no? Remember the saying, follow the money?
We cannot continue to blame "others" for our lack of intelligent decision making and lack of planning. This is a surprise because of ignorance, not an act of god. There are things we can do, and will do now, that we are forced into it. Food independence is one, because the dollars will not be there to buy so much. Our banking system, which serves the very few, should be overhauled. But, that takes talented, intelligent, apolitical individuals. We won't be seeing this anytime soon. It is an overwhelming belief system by our society, our educational system, our families, our churches, that have indoctrinated all of us into thinking that this dog eat dog world is the best we can do, or is the way it should be. There is a Christian message in all of this. I doubt the majority can understand it. This is by design.
Bankers just don't seem to give a damn. They don't want anything to change. They keep their paychecks while keeping their anti customer business model.
I didn't read anything you wrote that would contradict what I claim. These are exactly my points. I am not condoning this behaviour, I am simply pointing out the truth. The decimation of our natural resources will increase due specifically to the precarious economic situation of our people plus the added uncertainties of this pandemic. I have witnessed this first hand prior to any excuse that people will now have. As the unemployment rate rises, who will be feeding the thousands of people who live hand to mouth day to day? This government? The Christians? Foreign Direct Investment? Let's get real about the challenges this presents to those who value freedom and democracy? Think any one of our power hungry politicians doesn't see this as an "opportunity"?
