How you should handle travel The CDC advises against non-essential plane travel for older adults. Several US airlines have already slashed their flight schedules for the next few months. It's wise to stay off cruise ships for now, too. Cruise passengers are at an increased risk of person-to-person transmission with all the tight quarters, the CDC said, so if you're already made cruise plans, it's best to cancel them.
Dr. Sands is completely wrong in his prediction. There is nobody on earth who has immunity to this disease. He has no basis for this irresponsible remark when epidemiology experts are saying populations could experience up to 80% of their populations contracting it. He should be focused on informing us exactly how many respirators exist in the entire country and preparing the ground for many cases. We already know that PMH is woefully unprepared for this situation. Under the best of circumstances, we have people in gurneys in the halls. Our shortsightedness in allowing a chronic shortage of nurses, facilities, and medicines will assure that we will have the greatest number of casualties due to lack of available medical care. Most people with this virus, given the proper health support, will survive. Most of the thousands of deaths now being recorded are due to lack of available hospital services and the health condition of the elderly. Our health care system must also continue the ongoing and regular hospital services needed by our population, in general. This is a catastrophe in the making and the government of The Bahamas must institute measures such as closing all schools and public gatherings to minimize the outbreak numbers such that our limited medical facilities at PMH and Doctor's Hospital are not overwhelmed. The time for action has already passed. Why are we still waffling? Sands, get a grip and take significant preventative measures. Older people must not go out. Close the schools. Discourage public gatherings. Close ports of entry. Inform the public of the number and amounts of critical medical resources this country has available. Perhaps we need to consult with "experts" outside our country for advice.
I am unable to understand the attraction of a human being to one of the most vile creatures on earth. For god's sake Kevin Evans. Have you lost your mind? Imagine, just for a moment what Martin Luther King Jr., or Jesus himself would say about Trump. You have, in your short idiotic letter, showed that morals, environmental justice, human rights and spirituality are all meaningless so long as The Bahamas prospers? I have started a list of people who are holding this country back, and a list of people moving this country forward. Mr. Evans, if I didn't know better, and I don't, it seems that you would abolish all scientific knowledge and put our collective fates in the hands of bible thumping ignorant brain dead leaders such as yourself. To support trump is to support lies, ignorance, self aggrandizement, and hubris. It is totally beyond my imagination what could possibly motivate a so-called Christian person to see trump as anything other than evil incarnate. Kevin, you need to seek help.
You raised the most salient point. Why are the schools still open? Who says a failed educational system has no consequences for society? Isn't this the irony on display?
Sorry DWW, that does not follow. The vast majority, and 100% of the darker hued people's countries, have not had anywhere near the benefit of these deals. A handful of people get paid off, while the rest of the country suffers due to chemical contamination, destruction of their food sources, economic hardships, and increased corruption in government. There is not an example in the world where "the people" have benefited in the short run. We already know that that fossil fuel industry as a whole has exemplified the wanton destruction of the planet without a care given to sustainable civilization.
Andrew, exactly right. More Bahamians need to see the light. We cannot continue to give away this country to the highest bidder. Some things are sacred. Like life and the Bahamian people. Following a PLP or FNM party has led to results such as these. We must begin to look at policies and those supporting these policies. Not party loyalty. We also need to look ahead, further than next election.
What is the collateral? When do we borrow more? Who profits from these loans? The Bahamian people? Really? Many many questions for which we will likely never get an honest answer.
