Bahamians in The Bahamas are finished. This is now a country owned and run by those who produce little but expect a lot in return. As the cost of living continues to rise astronomically, as the cost of property and all related expenses continues to go through the roof, there is no way the majority of Bahamians will be able to "make it". The politicians are NOT working for "The People". They are working for a few people, mostly those in the FIRE sector. Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate. When the claim that because people are required to have liability insurance on their cars, therefore should be required to have insurance on their homes, is allowed to stand without realizing the stupidity of this statement, they obviously are lacking in any reason, or believe that Bahamians are just plain stupid. When I tell thinking people outside this country what our national conversations are of late, they merely laugh. It truly seems we are a nation of selfish children. This seems to be the best way to describe our national dialog and status.
Agreed. Is the educational aspect of keeping up with the emerging science at more than a second grade level here? No, it is not. Not even from our supposed environmental watchdogs such as bnt, best and our Environment Ministry. We are swaying in the political wind, with not an inkling of what responsibility we should have. The links between air pollution and health have been overwhelming these last few years alone. We remain stuck in archaic thinking, failing to acknowledge the personal and global consequences of buying the lies being told to us, over and over and over again. By our politicians and their moneyed masters. The country is adrift from a moral, social and intellectual perspective. Pretty sad with all the potential we had.
Bahama7, you are obviously a paid shill for the fossil fuel industry. That is what your presence on this site is all about. As irresponsible as one can get. Good luck on this venture improving the lives of us all. Or, do you really care about anyone except yourself?
If the government of The Bahamas goes along with, without challenging this announcement, this should disqualify The Bahamas from ever receiving a penny in aid for climate change mitigation or hurricane recovery assistance. If the director of the Bahamas National Trust, The Minister of Environment, the Prime Minister, the University of the Bahamas, and anyone else in a position of power who claims an educated understanding of what challenges we face as a people and a planet and they remain silent on this issue, they should be immediately be removed form office. Since the time this project was proposed, there has been a sea change of information regarding the burning of fossil fuels. None of which bode well for human health, or the health of Mother Earth. We ignore the evidence at our peril and ignore our responsibilities as citizens of the world. We have kept our heads in the sand on every significant issue which affects this country. Be it our social decline, our economic failings, or our abject political deficiencies. Our ignorance seems to know no bounds. This is a catastrophic moral and intellectual failing for which we should be held to account. It is not a handful of students who have been failed by our wholesale lack of attention given to education. We seem to have a whole nation of selfish and ignorant people. What metric does not point to this conclusion? Name one.
Absolutely right. Studies also suggest that eating fast food encourages people to foolishly vote for xenophobic war mongering dictators and tyrants. Hmmmm.
The majority of Bahamians are lead by Jesus. Looking around, is this the best we could do? Something ain't right. As they are with many overly religious communities.
No Brian, the answer is right in front of you. There has been great growth in the amount of money going to the wealthiest on earth. Those who produce nothing, they only manipulate numbers. As the bankers do, as the owners of corporations do with their buy backs and mergers and acquisitions. As the politicians do with their political favors. Do you honestly believe that the numbers boys don't influence our elections and policies? How about the gambling referendum? The economy has been working spectacularly for the very wealthy. They have seen tax breaks, artificially inflated corporate earnings, massive subsidies, and wages depressed on a global scale. The elites do not give a damn about the rest of the world. Hell, they do not even care if the living world shrivels and dies, as it certainly is now. You think they do not know these facts? Brian, I used to ask these same questions myself. How could things be going so wrong with all the brains and resources there to solve them? Then, I realized that things are going spectacularly well for those who make the laws and control the politicians. Those who control our lives are doing just fine, thank you very much. The only lie is that those in power care about the rest of us. They don't. Get used to it.
So Editor, What exactly are you advocating, if anything, to save this country? Is this the only responsibility of a free press. Just report on the carnage? If there is a value to a free press, what is it? In your lifetime of experience Editor, what exactly is it that has led this country on its tried and true course for the wonderful success we are all experiencing at present? Suggestion, pay attention to some of the speeches of Martin Luther King Jr. on Youtube. Does the term "civil disobedience" ring a bell? Or, do you honestly see another path to positive improvement. Please do not say going to the polls. I am posing this honest question to you, Editor. Is there a suggestion that the brilliance in the editorial department can put forth that actually works, before admitting that we must take to the streets? Be honest, and intelligent now.
Their chances for any accuracy for their financial predictions are no better than the predictions they made WHILE Dorian was bearing down on Abaco. Their heads are faced down to their desks. They, including Bowe, seem to have no grasp on the real world around them. Further and further they will help lead us to the cliff, and then they, yes they, will be out of here when the shit hits the fan. This is guaranteed. There can be absolutely nothing in the last 20 years that an intelligent, thinking person could grasp onto that suggests we really do have a fighting chance. We have a populace, politicians and a press that are completely in denial.
