Too late. We are already a shithole country according to trump.
He was obviously clued in to the whole drugs and guns scandal.
We will continue our backwards slide so long as we continue to play politics here and abroad, instead of be guided steadfastly by a higher moral calling Simply listen to Mia Motley of Barbados to see the stark difference between the two. Hear anything like her in The Bahamas? Of course not. We are always worried about the elephant about to sit on us.
We must accept that we are a country that has never before put intelligence and morality before self serving politics. Our continued brain drain will not subsist until we allow smart moral people to feel welcome here. At present,we are a regressive, reactionary Christian nationalist country, sorely lacking an educated moral class. Our political class is crass, ignorant, and vindictive. They have poisoned the country such that decent people do not want to be in politics or anywhere near this criminal class. This comment extends to the very top of our so-called leadership.

I would not trust the leadership of either country.
But, I would ask a few simple questions.
How many countries has the US and China invaded and destroyed in the last 30 years?
How many foreign military bases does Chine have? Two?
How many foreign military bases does the US have? 700 -800.
Hmmm.
Is there an educated person who does not believe that the tariffs that the trumpster will roll out this year will not cause the Bahamian cost of living to soar?
I do not like the dictatorial stance taken by either the US or China.
But, since our politicians have bent over and taken out these huge foreign currency loans, we will be trapped in this situation for generations to come.
We have given up our sovereignty for the sake of politics and the lack of vision for our people in the long run.
We could have invested in our own country over these decades, instead of fattening the least worthy of our people.
Sadly, we chose the latter.

One of this country's greatest crimes.
We continue to allow our most vulnerable to fall through the cracks, simply because there are other things we'd rather be spending our money on.
No educated Christian could go along with this.
But, we have and we do.
Our entire national health priorities are a disgrace. Truly.
And, because we lack the mental heath capacities, we end up putting people in jail who do not deserve to be there.
We have failed and need to bring in some competent people to start over.

Porcupine says...

We must first face the fact that we have a regressive taxation system.
This means that the poorest people, the workers, pay a higher, even odious share of the taxes needed to run our country and fatten our politicians.
This is a culture that cannot be changed overnight.
Worse, it means that we may call ourselves Christian, but seem to lack the education and morality to live according to the bible.
Those who are politicians in this country are used to a culture of governance where, who you know trumps what you know, or any other qualification that should be used in the hiring process.
We are a country rife with corruption and dishonesty. It has existed at the top for so long, that it has now permeated every facet of our society.
Given the existing business environment, nothing can change for the better until the vast majority of those who are currently in political office, are removed completely from ANY positions of influence in this country.
That is why it is difficult to ask our children who actually get educated, to come back home, or stay here, thinking things will get better.
This administration, along with most of our politicians in The Bahamas are the ones who are holding this country back.
We continue to fight against each other, as this Tribune article clearly explains, because we are too seeped in dishonesty and corruption at every level of society.
The net result will be the continuing growth of inequality whereby those who produce nothing, such as the web shops, banks, liquor stores, politicians, etc. will continue to gain a greater and greater share of the GDP, while those who actually work for a living will continue to sink to the bottom of our nation.
A D- educational output can never change these dynamics.
Neither can the likes of those we continually elect to do better, especially this present PLP administration.

In his ultimate stupidity, yes stupidity, Mr. Simon Wilson appears to be unable to see that we have a horrible regressive taxation structure that, according to University of Bahamas study, leaves the vast majority of Bahamian citizens in poverty or near poverty.
Wilson is part of a corrupt government that sees numbers as a political advantage that can be manipulated, with NO consideration for the Bahamian people.
I know of no legitimate business person in The Bahamas who thinks our economy is doing well, whose compliance is fair and easy to navigate, and fewer still who think it is fair and reasonable. This government seems hell-bent on destroying our economy.
Instead of tightening their very loose belts, they continue to spend like drunken sailors - on themselves.
The waste, corruption, theft and fraud at every level of government is apparent to most anyone who has a high school education.
This PLP government is all for themselves. Nothing more, nothing less.
Very little makes economic or financial sense in this small country of 400,000.
Sadly, instead of hiring bright, honest, and competent people to run our government, we choose people who are politically aligned with the purely political nepotism and, go along to get along, sycophants who are as dishonest and corrupt as those who hire them.
We do not have a well educated group of people who run this country. Which is why we have such poor outcomes in nearly every business and social metric we choose.
Mr. Wilson is a lost, poorly educated soul who has little idea of the crap that spews from his mouth.
