This is a fantastic idea and group!! It's truly amazing when these individuals should be relaxing and enjoying their hard-earned retirement and instead they step-up when needed and decide to help raise the grandkids. I'll definitely be looking to help donate anything they need to this group!
He is 110% correct -- you first need to offer a "reason" to visit Grand Bahama. Personally, I would definitely pick Abaco, Bimini, Exuma, and/or North Eleuthera way, way, WAY over GB any day of the week. Don't get me wrong, I've been to GB. However, as of today, I can't think of ONE reason for me to visit GB over any of those other Out Islands mentioned in the article. So yes -- they need to work on developing some attractions or reasons a visitor will want to come visit GB.
Glad to see your comment about putting down the shark was a joke. Whew! And yes... I have no problem with the death penalty for someone that kills another person.
Yes, Stuart is 100% spot on!! I've personally done his "shark dive" three times over the past few years and felt very safe the entire time. In fact, we did this dive last month with my two daughters and they absolutely loved it. Furthermore, you are much more at risk by snorkeling at the top of the water than you are by scuba diving down towards the bottom.
WHAT?!?!?!?!? Yes, the pit bull is put down because it is a danger to everyone in that particular neighborhood and because the specific dog can be positively ID'd by the person that got bit and sometimes by bystanders and now even my doorbell cameras. The problem with hunting down one specific Bull shark is there is NO WAY to confirm you have located the same shark.
110% agree with your post!! A much better purpose for any additional money would be towards hurricane preparations and rebuilding after the next big one. Now with that said, having some plastic bands on the tour boat to serve as tourniquets is a good idea (just like having life jackets on board). Hell, even just buying some large plastic zip ties from the hardware store might work.
By far and away, this is the most ridiculous post I've seen on this website in many, many years. First off, killing off the sharks isn't going to "teach" the few that survive to stay away from shallow waters or people. Secondly, the mere presence of sharks brings in millions and millions of dollars to the Bahamas due to the dive tourism industry.
I've snorkeled at Green Cay more times than I can count. Most recently was just last month with my wife and kids. In all my years there, I've never once seen a single shark! Very heartbreaking and sad news. Also, and more importantly, no where in the news or article did it say anything about the tour operator feeding or chumming the water.
Short answer: 1) Money -- not enough Govt money to go around and/or improper spending of the money by the Govt; and 2) Education -- the dumber your constituents, the easier it is to govern & get away with sub-par services.
We are a country of many, many islands and many of our citizens rely on the sea to provide food and employment. How is it possible and why is it a reality that we don't have more boats and more ships to patrol our waters? Isn't it just common sense that we should have a substantially larger Navy and Coast Guard? Several easy and quick benefits -- it would provide more jobs to our young adults, they can spend more time on the open sea & visit other Bahaman islands, they can learn more about the ocean and boating, they could help keep the borders more secure, and more importantly they could help prevent this type of poaching and theft. What is so hard to figure out? Does anyone in our Govt have an education beyond the 5th grade?????????
