Why do citizens have to pay in the first place to get service? Isn't that why BPL exists, to provide electricity? They make their return on investment over the lifetime of the property owner. Why should the first person in have to absorb cost of providing basic infrastructure? I know a fella what paid $30k to get service and everyone after him got free power and he got nothing back.. gangsters..
This is what you get in an economy that is devoid of competition.. plenty banks but no competition. No different from lawyers, real estate association, etc. Each group colluding within its members to fix the cost of everything.. The bottom line is we need more ways to get returns beside the bank and we have to break up the cartels.
Have to say I agree with PLP on this. A person earned their pension and if you want them to work again, they should be paid. One has nothing to do with the other.
Kwasi knows there is no intention to compensate for the revenue they will forgo. We will just let the national debt keep climbing. It’s a lot easier to blame the IMF when they impose tough times on us than to do it ourselves.. you all know the playbook option, victim syndrome.. we are being bullied, it’s no fault of ours right?
National development plan sounds good but reality is we have elections and no new government wants to be held to what previous government planned. So we will always be ‘starting over, when governments change e.g, just like the 2017 FNM gov,t, PLP doing same ‘we will review everything’ drill. Decoded it means we need that money for our pet projects. Politicians will have some believe they govern for you but they really govern for themselves and kegacy.. I want my name on a building or a street or I want a statute of me somewhere, etc.
Issue here is Security or more accurately the lack of it. Renovations or not, important national structures should always have security present. This lunatic obviously watched too many Taliban propaganda videos. As for Columbus, all the talk about the past is BS because it can’t be changed. He could have destroyed the f..ing statute, it would change nothing. The revisionists among us are another dangerous group that should be under surveillance by ISB before they embrace this domestic terrorism.. bottom line; you have to be able to take the bad with the good.
We need to see this for what it is, another shameful fleecing of the Bahamian in a country with plenty banks but no competition. Royal calls themselves the helpful bank.. question is helping who? Themselves?
I agree he probably did nothing criminal but surely that is not the only standard by which we assess public figures? has the bench gotten so weak we compromise on everything else?.. Fitzgerald solicited a major employer for personal benefit or that of his immediate family.... that is the issue.. you can''t have government figures owing favours to major employers. whatever happened to ethical behaviour? Standards are low, but how much lower are we prepared to go?
My how quickly times change.. wasn’t that long ago things were so bad then Finance Minister Turnquest said the House would stop providing lunch for the few days they meet per year to address the runaway debt.
The Unions definitely played their role in ensuring the demise of the FNM at the polls. They have gotten used to generous and frankly outrageous salary increases regardless of fiscal reality, benefits our brioke country camt afford. We will all pay the price as govt debt will continue to spiral out of control and budget deficits become more frightening. God bless them all.
