these folks aren't silly... they know a sinking ship when they see it and they also know the best separation package they could ever hope for will come from a weak and gullible gov't. whatever happened to long established practices like redundancy and outright termination.
'significantly less' is gov't code talk meaning we won't do all that is required but we will say we did. a few years frm now, they will come to us and say oh, its worse than we were led to believe and we will have to now spend x dollars to repair. next thing is, we know in this country, estimates aren't worth the paper they are written on. look at the baseball stadium.
one can only wonder in shock and amazement at the appaling level of apathy when it concerns spending the people's money. nobody has a care or concern. how the hell can a project start at an estimate of $16m and now is north of $30m and still rising? who is responsible to manage these things? what is the role of the MOW building dept., and Min of Finance? where is the Auditor-General in all of this? we'll be like Venezuela and Zimbabwe yet... and sheeprunner is right.. who will stand for the people like Rollins used to do and bring these things to light and demand action and accountability?
this country must need to repent or someth8ng. every time you open the papers, you read about another 100 million dollar obligation on gov't, and by extension, we the taxpayers. i mean my god. all we need now is a hit by a Cat 5 storm and it will be game over... talk about frustration...
just like the money wasted on so many other gov't 'business adventures', this will likely be a collosal waste of taxpayer money. Maybe this could be a luxury a wealthy society could stomach for the greater national interest, but given our current predicament and a stagnant economy with an anemic growth rate, thats another question.
you cant serve two masters. Management is tasked with managing a company. Unions come along, and they want to do the same thing. How the hell is that supposed to work? One of the many dysfunctional aspects of the bahamas work scene is workers dont understand that their purpose is, i) show up, ii) do your job (if you know how) and iii) go home when time is finished. Rank and file staff are not consultants and are not employed to give management advice or directives.
at the end of the day, regardless of the sales pitch, each individual has to accept responsibility for their actions or inactions. this is something we Bahamians, and frankly a lot of people other places too, suffer from.. we dont take responsibility for anything. its always someone else's fault. by this reasoning, drug abuse, corruption, prostitution, gambling, etc., are all the fault of the party pushing it, not the customer. why have a brain?
Bahamas rating low on yet another important issue.. why cant we get our act together? to have achieved so little despite the enormous sums spent by succeeding administrations over the years, speaks volumes.. we need to find a way to encourage a spirit of excellence among ourselves then we would be motivated to strive for high standards. others do it, i believe we can too.
