Good political talk, but thats about it.. airports alone do not miraculously lead to great tourist arrivals. You need much more... Facts are that south of Exuma, there has not been a single successful touristic resort of any magnitude ever. They put a big airport in north Cat Island decades ago, the place is still as run down and delapidated as ever. Lets look at Abaco, a big airport in Treasure Cay built decades ago.. you could lay down on the runway most days and never get run over by an airplane... Big airport in Governors Harbour courtesy of the USA and Club Med closed. Perhaps some boutique resorts might have a chance in LI, but thats about it and that does not merit a major airport. What they need is better connections and frequency from Nassau to suit arriving and departing US flights so the journey time is less than going to Europe or across the Pacific. They struggle to keep flights into Freeport using heavy subsidies from the MOT for heaven's sake. Better to spend a few dollars trying to revive a farming economy and perhaps bolstering the fishing industry somehow, much more potentially viable and realistic options in my view.
the national debt will continue to climb as we all lack discipline. i suggest regarding the 1:1 peg B$ vs. US $, a run on the banks will start as the writing on the wall becomes clearer, so why not get rid of the B$ and adopt the US $ as the national currency like many others have e.g. Zimbabwe, Panama, Turks & Caicos, etc.
Sounds like the makings of a economic assassination plot... maybe because we wont play ball on the tax thing like they want, maybe because of our coziness with the Chinese, maybe because the Trump gang are anti-everybody including now small black countries, maybe MSNBC wants some juicy news to pump the ratings, maybe they want some drug lord extradited, ... who knows what the motivation is?. Bottom line, nothing is a sure thing anymore.
you have to be qualified and experienced to fill some roles. we have not done a very good job in this area and this kind of talk, never mind how well intentioned, perpetuates the hand out mentality. even for the few who are book qualified, most lack global exposure due to our propensity to see the bahamas as the world, and hence not seeking overseas exposure to broaden and enhance the book learning...
i hope we don't buckle under pressure. if the option we have chosen (bilateral) is provided for and we consider it most appropriate for us, then lets hold our ground. the europeans need to wean themselves off their colonialist tendencies...
dont get excited too fast.. more controllers will have to be hired and trained which requires time and money, big investment in technology for radar systems, communication technology, etc., and biggest of all is responsibility for Search and rescue within the area you control ( see the Australians had to spend millions looking for Malaysian Airlines that did not takeoff or land there but is believed to have disappeared in an area they are responsible for). point being, there will be big revenue but also big expense so the net might be more modest. finally for Mr. Butler, i believe we have a condolidated budget where all revenue goes so i would not make any plans thinking income from fees will only go back into the Industry.
Hanna-Martin does not have to be "outraged". Nottage, the Minister responsible, need not be "surprised". Stop talking and do something for heaven's sake. They have the POWER to transfer, fire, demote or do whatever else they wish with this man. If not them, then who?
