You have to be kidding. Cable Bahamas is no G.E., but BTC cannot even get our land line phones to work properly. Fiber-optic cable to the home? I would not hold your breath.
There must be little of importance to do at the National Congress of Trade Unions these days. This list of gripes regarding the performance of a business entity, is the rough equivalent to a child complaining about the rainy weather during a planned beach vacation. Welcome to economic reality Mr.Trade Union Congress. I'm surprised this litany did not include a criticism of the paint color chosen for the Cable Bahamas business headquarters.
Tal, why blame the insurers? It is the cost of medical care that causes insurance rates to go up. Blaming the insurers is like blaming the newspapers for our crime epidemic in the Bahamas because they write about it. Insurers have to price policies so they can pay the benefits and still have enough profit to continue to operate.
What is silly about this totally opaque National Health Insurance plan is that it can offer all kinds of medical benefits but if there are no medical professionals willing to provide the promised services, or if the facilities are not made available for them to practice competently, at the payment levels the plan promises, you have accomplished nothing. Welcome to the world of Obamacare. Welcome to the long lines and long waits and inferior care supplied by the oft vaunted Canadian Single Payer System. None of these systems work. They all provide nothing but inferior service for those who cannot pay for good quality service. This is a scam, politicians worldwide like to pull on ignorant voters. They promise or "mandate" low cost health care but can deliver nothing but the "promise". Health care is provided by doctors and nurses, not cabinet ministers.
All predictable. Liquidation has proved an insoluble disaster just as all who knew anything about this situation foretold. Humpty Dumpty cannot be put back together again, no matter how much our P.M. 'huffs and puffs". Liquidation controlled by Bahamian Courts, was however the only way to keep an honest, and transparent, third party from exposing all the insider dealings in which PLP insiders were engaged. That was something the sitting government could not permit to occur.
"...which found that their “ill gotten gains” were likely higher than allowed for by federal regulators." Seriously I don't mean to quibble, but "ill gotten gains" are by definition "illegal". this sentence is tautological. No "ill gotten gains" are allowed by law.
Where is the outrage. All of the responsible environmental groups in the Bahamas pleaded with government to put a stop to this degradation of the precious reef system on Bimini. Evidence detailing the sorry record of these "docking facilities" being built and then abandoned all over the Bahamas was presented. Do we need to recite the list here? Just like Disney Cruises did in Freeport after GBPA spent $17 million renovating Freeport Harbour as a dedicated port for Disney.Just like Disney did at Guana Cay. Just like the Big Red Boat did when GBPA closed off and refurbished Obera Beach. No one in government would listen. Where is the outrage? The corals are gone. The pristine environment of Bimini is destroyed. it will take generations for it to recover if ever. Now all for what?????
Let's limit ourselves to immediate actions. Addressing social problems like educational reform is too broad a topic for a discussion like this.
1. Impose an immediate curfew on all persons under age 21 at midnight, seven days a week. Flood the crime area streets of N.P. with police at midnight and make the penalty sufficiently severe that within weeks, those under 21 will be inside at midnight or in jail.
2. Do whatever is necessary to alter the recent criminal conspiracy laws, so that the kind of evidence the police are able to adduce will be sufficient to establish membership in a criminal gang. Enforce those laws with such rigor that all such gangs will be wiped off the streets on N.P. Island.
3. Recognize that in a country with such a small population, family ties will trump rule of law far too often. Arrange to exchange local police officers in significant numbers with officers from similarly challenged Caribbean nations.
4. Remove the chief law enforcement officer (A.G.) from the first level political process. Have the judiciary recommend an A.G. for appointment and give the judiciary the power to request the A.G.'s removal. No A.G. to be elected by government except with approval of judiciary.
5. Create senior position in RBP that has to be staffed by foreign officer, preferably from U.S. or Great Britain. Make position sufficiently high and with sufficient powers that if there is any corruption or playing with equal justice in RBP, that officer can blow the whistle loud and clear.
But if this were addressed in that manner, Commissar Fred would not get his mug in the news and could not demagogue his favorite issue, which is evil foreigners, particularly evil foreigners from that imperialist power next door.
This is hilarious. Transparency? Fred Mitchell? Deport before testimony that would expose his fascist department? Fred shows the transparency of his good pals the Castro Brothers. The transparency of the Gulag!
Shane may not know what planet he is on, but at least we can be sure he knows what time it is. After all he still retains that very expensive wrist watch gifted by his now dead "close family friend" who was expressing her gratitude over the expeditious way her residency application was handled.
