Any form of privatization will be an improvement because it will loosen the grip of the union. Of course the kind of transparent, open process suggested by the opposition would be far better than a back room deal among cronies, but there is no possible "worse case" than the present dysfunctional mess.
By all means desist criticizing Comrade Fred behind his back. Let's all criticize him to his face. If he were not an international toady to the Communist thugs in Cuba, who misses no opportunity to twist the nose of our democratic neighbor on whom 90% of our economy is dependent, Bahamaland would not be in this nasty mess.
One must wonder if there is any issue that Tal will not ascribe to an evil Redshirt plot? Tal are hurricanes as well, the product of Redshirt intransigence?
Fred loves the Castros and aligns his marching orders so as not to offend his socialist dictator pals. He'd love to have that system imposed on Bahamians. Then he and the perceived PLP elites could openly live like kings and would be pestered by no "corruption" complaints from the riff-raff, all of whom could be imprisoned with impunity.
You are right about "their own country", but Commizar Fred, never misses a chance to reference Cuba as a worker's paradise, a friend of the Bahamas, and to assault the U.S. as the land of the reactionary right. Your sentiments regarding these protests are right on, but this stuff is happening, only because the Foreign Minister of this country is publishing internationally his personal, distorted, world political view, as the view of the people of the Bahamas and he is playing right into the hands of the Cuban dispora, who know the truth about the Castro's and are just looking for someplace to vent their righteous rage.
Let's see. Man in a National Park, surrounded by group of thugs wielding iron bars, who chase him to his car and then smash his car windows. (All on video by the way.)
Man immediately files detailed police report supported by video and pictures.
One of the thugs (Mr. Koed Smith) pictured in video with iron bar in hand,is charged with assault. Then and only then, claim of harm by automobile from an anonymous thug emerges, and police file a charge against the assault victim?
In his car, as man is attempting to escape from grave bodily harm by backing out, this anonymous thug claims he was "brushed by car". No injury claimed. No contemporaneous police report filed.
You have to be kidding. We knew that in the Bahamas there is no "stand your ground" law, but I guess the authorities assert there is a "you can't even try to escape" law.
Law abiding citizen is supposed to just sit there and get beaten to death by thugs, or face criminal charges lest he touch one trying to escape. Wonderful world.
Maybe if Comrade Fred were a little more balanced in his expression of views regarding the totalitarian state of Cuba, the Cuban refugees in the U.S. would be a little less motivated to make trouble for the Bahamas.
Fred figures that there are no consequences to his paling around and always defending his fellow socialists, despite the fact that the important market for the country he was elected to serve is the U.S. and U.S. tourism.
No doubt that the country needs to stand up to inappropriate criticism and defend itself. Who would argue with that? However, that said, does the Foreign Minister deserve some "credit" for the rough nature of our relations with an important constituency in the U.S.?
