The construction by the Aga Kahn in the sea park was an issue that was repeatedly raised in Parliament by the PLP minority at the time of Prime Minister Ingraham's trip. This despite the approval from every involved governmental agency for the construction, and further the approval of the BNT.
In light of the PLP making a national issue over the legality of that construction and in light of serial accusations that the legally issued permits were not being adhered to, the P.M. decided to visit the site and make a personal inspection. The Aga Kahn had a helicopter making daily trips to the island and when invited to use that means of transportation which undoubtedly saved at a minimum a full day of his valuable time the P.M. accepted.
There was no gift to the FNM. There was no benefit to the serving P.M. other than saving him time. The Aga Kahn did not construct without valid permits, the law was scrupulously followed.
How can that be compared to what was depicted in the Nygard Saves His Bahamas video? How does that compare to the concrete structures on the seabed adjacent to Mr. Nygard's home that are clearly shown in that video. Those constructions he continues to claim resulted from "natural accretion".
How can that be compared to the published suggestion of $5 million dollars in "slush funds" handed to the current government but still unaccounted for?
These attempts to suggest that "our hands may be dirty but we're not the only ones" are not only irrelevant (I theeft but everyone does it?) but are inapposite.
P.M. Ingraham's use of the helicopter was in the public service. There is nothing about the public service associated with a bunch of cabinet ministers sitting around fawning over a egoist who admits to a $5 million dollar contribution to something the public is not permitted to know about.
Why has the U.S. not accepted our ambassador's credentials?
Assuming the detention center videos were fraudulent, why did someone go to all the trouble to do that to Bahamas-land?
Maybe Comrade Fred needs to offer a report to the public on how important Cuban tourism is to our economy compared to U.S. tourism.
Maybe he needs to forget his personal affection for the communist tyrants in Cuba, and start doing his job in the best interests of the Bahamian people.
Hey Fred, please check out which side of the bread our butter is on. Cuba and the U.S. "they are both friends of ours": Does Fred intend to give both equal status as "friends" of the Bahamas?
Yes he does, every chance he gets and including the U.S. nearly chokes in his throat. Ergo the U.S. is ignoring his pick for ambassador to their country, and is issuing travel warnings to tourists thinking of coming to our country.
There are consequences to the Bahamas resulting from the P.M. leaving Fred to pander to his personal, far left, ideological views.
The P.M. well knows that the entire Lyford Cay community stands totally opposed to the serial environmental depredations conducted over many years at Simms Point. The POA of Lyford Cay, the organization that represents all of the Lyford home owners, has gone to court to stop those illegal activities and its officers among others have been sued by Mr. Nygard for daring to expose what he is doing there.
This is emphatically not a fight between two neighbors. It is a fight for the heart and soul of the Bahamas. Is this beautiful country to be ruled by law or by a super wealthy foreigner spreading around favors and entertainments?
It is easy to try to pass this matter off as something that does not impact the average Bahamian, but that is wrong. It goes to he heart of the future of this country. All this stem cell puff up is a smoke screen for Mr. Nygard to continue his lawless ways.
This comment unfortunately reflects the abysmal ignorance of the general Bahamian public regarding the contribution of Lyford Cay residents to Bahamian society. The Lyford Cay Foundation which is virtually 100% funded by the contributions of the "wealthy Lyford Cay residents" referenced above, contributes over $2,000,000 annually to Bahamian charitable causes including over $1,000,000 annually in scholarship and other scholastic assistance to Bahamian children and young people. The contributions of these "wealthy Lyford Cay residents" to the Bahamas each and every year dwarf the amount of publicity seeking Bahamian "sports donations" Mr. Nygard has made in his entire lifetime. Some people give in order to do good. Some people give only to promote self interest. You figure out who is who.
"Mr. Nygard has done nothing wrong." quoting the current Minister of Marine Resources.
Oh, let's see. How about the cease, desist and restore order that was legally issued and remains outstanding respecting Mr. Nygard's serial depredation of the seabed adjacent to Nygard Cay. When will the current A.G. enforce this lawful order? Does the Minister of Marine Resources care about the sea bed or does he care about lavish entertainment and partying at the home of a generous campaign contributor?
Mr. Nygard's own video (We've Taken Back Our Bahamas) clearly depicts concrete structures built directly on the seabed adjacent to his home. Mr. Minister, please explain to us simple folk how those concrete structures arose via natural accretion? I guess the fact that Mr. Nygard's "cay" has grown by more than an acre is just the result of Divine intervention and the suggested response to all those photographs of his sand pumping machines working 24/7 fall in the "Don't believe your lying eyes" category.
Now Mr. Nygard wishes to build a multimillion dollar stem cell research facility on his "cay" which is located in a purely residential neighborhood; serviced by a narrow one lane road; with no parking facilities or other necessary infrastructure to support such an enterprise; that is "going to employ hundreds of Bahamians". Can one surmise that it will turn out be the only "state of the art stem cell research facility" principally designed to conduct all night bacchanals?
Suddenly we need Stem Cell research legislation prioritized in our Parliament? Just a coincidence I am sure. What happened to the plan to lease Crown Land (Bahamian sea bed he has appropriated) to Mr. Nygard' to clear up the legal problems with his serial law breaking? Did the light of day cause some in government to rethink a blatant theft of public property, rewarding an environmental miscreant? Now can we go around to the back door and authorize his behavior by calling it an investment in stem cell research?
This whole thing smells to High Heaven. Please don't insult our intelligence.
Isn't it long past time for trying to turn this national tragedy into a political issue?
Please Mr. Davis and Please leaders of the loyal opposition.
This scourge threatens to tear our beautiful society to shreds. We are in danger of total social and economic breakdown. Clearly we need to treat this problem on a "wartime" footing. No time for politics. No time for cowardice.
We need to start by enacting whatever laws as are necessary, on a totally bipartisan basis, to get the violent thugs off the streets. Something effective that will stop this surge to violence in its tracks.
If that means taking our court system out of the control of the House of Lords, so be it.
This is a public emergency and it demands emergency measures.
It looks to me like Mr. Miller is doing his best to clean up the mess at BEC and he deserves our support.
That said, the root of the problem is public ownership and the intrusion of politics into the operation of one of the most critical of national infrastructures.
It is obvious to anyone who is willing to be honest that the BEC needs to be privatized. A governmental oversight function may be employed, but the day to day operation of electric utilities cannot be a football used by successive governments to pay off their supporters if you expect the efficient delivery of utility services.
Can't we stop pretending and find a good private operator to take over this critical function?
