The article says "Urging BPL to further reduce reliance on fossil fuels, given that The Bahamas is aiming to produce 30 percent of its energy mix from renewable sources by 2030, ..."
THIS is the kind of nonsense that people here in the Bahamas, the USA, Britain, everywhere have to put up with all the time. These insane comments about what's going to happen 11 years from now. Then we deal with the 11 years of minor added delays which pushes the plan a further 5 years down the road, and often times by then the actual problem no longer even exists or has been solved some other way.
Why have a plan to have 30% of energy from renewables by 2030? That is stupid. Instead show some guts and some bravery and some competence by having instead a plan to have 1% of the energy mix from renewables by December 2020?
1% by December 2020. Solve big problems one bite at a time. Show that you are actually doing something, something measurable. 1% is a LOT. Once people can see that actually working in a measured, provable amount - then others will hop on board and the program will expand.
This is one of the big reasons why the FNM lost in 2012. They had a BUNCH of projects that were nearly completed, but NONE were actually completed. The people want results, not empty promises. A track record of success, not a promise to learn what to do over a ten year period and then ask for another 5 years on top of the ten.
...and combined with that - you NEVER see the face of a Bahamian business owner being brought into court charged with hiring an illegal. Those special photo ops are reserved for low level drug pushers and accused murderers on their way to a 2 night prison stay followed by release on bail. No Bahamians are ever charged with hiring illegals. Not one has appeared in the news in the last 3 years. Haitians in their homeland know this.
Yeahyasee. I didnt say that with any disrespectful intention. Im actually saying the man is doing more job than i would be doing. In my opinion he is risking being used as a scapegoat. Instead of going above and beyond, he should ensure everyone knows he is not the FS, so he dont get blamed.
....and yet, the IDB continues to lend us money. We have NO HELP from the international community in dealing with the problems our government shoulders us with. Why don't they cut off loans? No, instead, every time you turn around our government is borrowing more money from the IDB and they in turn are lending it.
So why should government change? They have no incentive. They can do whatever they feel like doing, if they run into problems - they just call their good friends at IDB for a few cool millions on the backs of our grandchildren. And IDB replies, as if saying cool bro - no problem - we don't care about your grandchildren or those of your constituents - just sign here.
"...He further accused Dr Minnis of heeding the cry of the “lynch mob” instead of rising above the fray to demonstrate respect for the rule of law and compassion for fellow Christians that have just suffered a terrible disaster."
The "lynch mob" you refer to, Mr. Smith, are the voters who are going to kick him out next election along with the 4 remaining PLPs because nothing has been done on this matter by either Party. Nothing. The DNA has not fallen in line on this issue either, so they have no chance. Bahamians are sick and tired of these and other foreigners coming in here and literally taking over. Bahamians are the lowest dogs in the Bahamas - and they know it - and they are sick of it.
Change is coming in 2022 (or before if the GG should act), and it's going to be a whole new world. The alternative is a true devaluation of our dollar. The time of selling out the grandchildren of Bahamians with international loans to prop up a near worthless dollar will come to an end long before 2025 unless real change is made. VAT cannot just be raised to 100%. Economies don't work like that.
By the way, since the injunction was given in August 2018 - over a year ago - and the judicial review has not yet been completed, perhaps the Attorney General should instruct Public Prosecutions to stop sending ANY new cases to the Courts for the time being until they can find time to do the judicial review. I know that would cause a lot of grief, with criminals eventually being released from jail as their times run up for bail etc, and a host of other problems like land sales being unable to complete etc - but this is a fight for the very life of the country - and so ALL of those matters are secondary. Hold up any new cases coming before the Courts until this review is completed. Where is the strong leadership we voted for?
And, in the end, it will all be for nothing. They will just find new things to waste money on. Mr. Lloyd has already predicted a possible $25M to rebuild Abaco & Freeport schools - LOL. The first nickel ain't fall in the pot yet.
The other thing is, Mr. Johnson should note that he is "Acting" financial secretary and there hasn't been an actual Financial Secretary now for well over a decade. There is a reason for that. If I were him, I would sit small until my name call. As long as you are doing the job sir without the title, you will never get the title. It truly does no good to have your picture in the papers until that day comes.
SO, you allowed ALL of these schools that need millions of dollars in repairs to open? Can we imagine what condition they are in? Can we guess whether or not there are any safety issues therein?
Or could it just be that it's "cool" to say "25 million". Sounds cool to say, while children are going to bed eating Ramen Noodles and Vienna Sausage.
Why don't you repair ONE school for one million, and let's see the results, before you hitch your wagon too high?
