The article fails to mention what we get out of the deal. It sounds like 250 permanent jobs and perhaps some spin-off to support or related business.
While that is good, the cost is kinda high for that.
Nobody thought of maybe ten cents per barrel of oil which flows thru the pipelines? Even one cent would add up.
It seems they won't be paying the 1/2% business license fee since they are exempt from taxes on income.
So exactly what are we getting out of this deal over the next 45 years? I was in support of this deal because Freeport needs help. But 600 temp and 250 perm jobs is a joke....even if another 200 spin-off jobs result.
There is no reason we cannot get a fixed amount per gallon/barrel flow. Im sure there is no other country on Earth that would allow this kind of business without some kind of ongoing pro-rated income resulting. Why are we always the jacks?
Actually I am Mad as a Hatter - but that is beside the point. The point is that here in the Bahamas we import most of our "stuff" from the USA, we travel there all the time, watch their movies, listen to their music, wear their designer clothes and hairstyles, drive their cars, use their computers, and eat mainly their food. We also like to run around town to all the stores trying to "change up money" to go on a trip. Yes, somehow the idea of being an actual state (instead of a pretend one) seems to offend us.
observer...yes, and when you factor in the lower cost of living in the US, that 4x salary becomes about 7x.
Trump has offered (thru back channels) for The Bahamas to become the 51st state - but our leaders have refused without (as usual) even consulting the public.
He said: “One of the things about Abaco is that at its height, Abaco only uses 26 megawatts of power. We have the ability in Abaco to generate 50 megawatts of power from Wilson City.”
.......simply because 50% of Abaco residents are not connected to any supply by choice.
Many are paying attention to the latest reggae songs and newest gansta hits. Of course, we also have Junkanoo, and duty free baby food. That's all the majority pay attention to.
Hey thanks Birdie. Yeah, the last thing we would want to do is disrespect the numbers "men". LOL. The whole country can go to Hell, just don't disrespect those lofty gentlemen, for God's sake.
I see in another newspaper today that "the well known Q.C." is trying to persuade Haiti to stop accepting Bahamas born persons of Haitian descent..
He has always been a defender of the Constitution, right? Doesn't he know that the Constitution of Haiti grants citizenship to persons born of Haitian parentage no matter where in the world they are born? Is he advocating a change in their Constitution?
Any chance we can make that change simultaneous with a helpful change in ours?
Does he really think the Bahamas can host 12 million Haitians to live on our few tiny rocks we call a country? What, I wonder, is his true motivation behind all of this. Did the Bahamas (in addition to making him a multi-millionaire) do something over the decades to offend him?
