In his short sightedness the former PM created this scenario when he allowed E.St.George to sell Port assets to Hutchinson. I don't believe anyone can fault Hutchinson, they did everything they said they'd do, including renovate and open that hotel strip: Not run at a loss forever. They have what they want and have reasons they won't do anything else. Look to the Port Authority, named that for a reason! Aside Pindling it has been prior FNM Governments that have given Freeport businesses the most trouble! When your Chamber of Commerce considers Judicial review or lawsuit you know something is drastically wrong! No, look directly at the Port Authority. They are either oblivious to their responsibility or willfully negligent.
Personally, having been there twice in a boat, it aught not be messed with, particularly with the minimal benefit to people and country the cruise lines give. The time is coming that these cruise lines will find that bowling over small countries with ever increasing demands is over. It cannot happen soon enough for me. Having said that, no Bahamian gets screwed without a Bahamian, usually the politicians, approving the screwing. When we the people learn that, things may change.
Don Anthony is right, and the real question is, Where is URCA? Are they not the Regulator? How is it that BEC/BPL wether Government owned or Foreign owned (pending) is determining policy? If Vested interests are going to determine policy, will the policy they create ever negatively affect them?
Firstly, if he was the Government it would be someone from the FNM side saying exactly the same thing about him. Secondly, yes, I believe it would be a treasury funded Cronyville under Davis and Co. Worse than applying for shipyard Jobs at a G.B. Politicians constituency office. Final point, one would really have to be gullible as all to believe ANY politicians Election promises. Ingraham engineered this fiasco, Gave St George what he wanted, he got what he wanted. If we could ever get beyond that modus operandi, we might actually get to nation building.
Shell North America is NOT Shell Bahamas, and would be surprised if Shell N.A. doesn't put a cease and desist on the local one or make them change their logo. It is slightly different. As to the shares in the local Shell, I believe BP is right.
Maybe if the cars glowed in the dark they'd see and stop crashing into each other? Seriously, Cesium radioactivity is deadly, so we better get Bahamas Customs some geiger counters. But wait, wasn't this in the press a year or two ago and we were assured radioactive cars were screened out and not shipped? But now they have been?
And there folks is the damning indictment: Someone in Government still thinks we have a brand, and the buyer that all had their hopes pinned on walked away for sensible business reasons. Which also serves to wipe away the illusion that FDI is here to create jobs. They're here to create profits. Jobs may be a side benefit, but never has been or will be the purpose. Let that sit and stew like whelks. $300/person/Month. Energy 25% of Bahamian costs. They grow their own food making food 50% less. And the hotel needs to be imploded. But, Hutchinson only did the hotel as a quid quo pro with Ingraham to get their container port and airport, and 50% of DEVCO approval to purchase.
And who's engines will burn this LNG? Wartsila. diesel engines converted to LNG. Waitaminit, isn't there someone locally tied into them? There goes a snake slithering thru the grass............
Point Taken BP, and I agree with Thisisours also(last paragraph), but will say I was highlighting their Glaring or highest ranking qualities. Sad thing is they all become overnight Experts once elected/appointed, as if rank bestows knowledge. Nor does wealth denote intelligence, and if derived from stripping someone else or the treasury, a lack of ethics.
There are subtle difference between PLP and FNM, Example Corrupt vs. inept, just to think or one quickly. No Obie, Government can do nothing except drive G.B. into a wall, much like they've done with the country. Government is half the equation for G.B's current deplorable state. If however, by private sector you are referring to the GBPA, then no, you cannot depend on them for anything but more of the same. They are quasi-governmental, a "municipal Government in Private hands" Unfortunately they have adopted Government worst practices instead of Private sector best practices, which defies logic and sensibility but stands as a testament to everything that can go wrong, has.
