Bahamians add front rooms, side rooms, extensions, swimming pools without permits, inspections, but gripe about shanty towns existence. Half of our Government building resemble shantytowns. Our problem is and will always be enforcement. I find it ironic we have ignored most of the laws on the books, (save those which the government use to keep us controlled) but write new laws to overcome obvious failures of enforcement. All we can see is the "Horrors of the Haitian take over" but remain blind to the garbage all around us, the corruption all around us, how we treat our own children, our own elderly. For a people bestowed with such luck, location, self determination and potential to even have shanty towns in our midst is a direct reflection on us. We, with our paranoias and prejudices created the shanty towns.
While the Port Authority is a pathetic entity at best, completely clueless about what they should be doing, a Government takeover would be infinitely worse. Multiple Governments are equally at fault, for allowing the Port Authority to completely ignore their development mandate. The Port sell off of assets Ingraham allowed has almost completely bound the island into stagnation. Even a crook couldn't make a dime in Freeport today. (save the well established ones, those we can all name) Complete land mismanagement, Management self dealing, Ownership oblivion, Such wasted potential.
Insanity, plain and simple. The IMF is laughing at us, feeding us more loans and our own demise, and we lap it up. No wonder real money is exiting the Bahamas. Bahamian money, not foreign.
With no double taxation treaty, our visitors may get taxed twice, U.S. ad Bahamian VAT, Not sure of the tax rate that applies to U.S. Airbnb bookings, perhaps based on State/location? In any case, we sure are buggering things up to get them straight! (?)
The real question for me is are insurance "Cover notes" being used by Insurance companies for claim denial? There is a front end and a back end to these "deals" that aught to be reported on also.
Not for Hartnell to be ashamed, but those who make the pronouncements that fall apart reliably! Their failures and successes aught to be reported, although the former is almost exclusively prevalent I agree.
Pure scam and land Grab for speculation. There must be some publication available in the rest of the world detailing just how easy it is to scam/bribe/swing Bahamian politicians ( and their minions )! Simply appeal to their sense of greed and they roll over and play dead. The more outlandish the plan the harder they fall.
Seems the word Foreigner has (once again) become synonymous with the BogeyMan! We are more phobic about illusions than reality, always have been, which is why our politicians are perpetual apologists for why nothing can happen/shouldn't happen/won't work/etc. Meanwhile, there is no shortage of Morons, our problem is electing and appointing them.
