If you are taught garbage (and lies, untruths) for 50 years, It is hard to cope with reality. These who march probably do so because their jobs have been threatened if they don't. They work for the numbers shops because there isn't much else they can do. As a group they are a sad indictment of our past 50 year history. I assure you they have no clue or care about the consequences of debt default or devaluation, or any thought past lunchtime. By legalizing the numbers "Industry" the PLP have created the biggest destabilizing force our country has ever seen, That need no imports, no inventory, insurance, and little operating overheads aside minimum wage salaries. Depending on how far they go, legal or not they could end up being considered "domestic terrorists...."
A classic Bahamian "no one will patronize my lodge, so I'll cause all lodges to suffer!" That's my understanding. They've severely diminished the industry and he pushes for more damage! As it is it will take years for trust and clarity to return. Man, we crap on each other with great reliability! Foreigners only crap on us with the approval of a Bahamian! (elected or fronting)
#1 income earner from any Bahamian goods supply business? The suppliers #2 income earner? Payroll (staff) #3? Bahamas Government #4? Power co, phone co And the list goes on. Store owner is usually around # 6-8 4-5 years ago you'd have made more money on on your money in interest in a bank. That is obviously no longer true......
Anyway, I'll tell you what not to expect: Fiscal accountability from Government, scaling back expenditures, Reduction in deficit or national debt, or any new found honesty.
Amazing how they will pillory Merchants Before the event whether prices drop or not. Their sins as former Government and Civil servants is creating the deficit and national debt we now have to pay for. That ongoing dirty deed is done. Nice diversionary Tactic. Meanwhile, instead of demonizing those in society that you cannot do without, try educating the Bahamian people on where their increasing cost of living and lack of opportunities really come from!
Legalizing them without first prosecuting and seizing illegal revenues first, created this problem. Licensing the same operators over was a second mistake. Not creating National lottery was a missed opportunity. I am starting to think there is a lot of missing aptitude in Government. Drinking the purple kool-aid don't help.
I really don't see The Bahamas pandering to the "old British farts", Our Government has a history of ignoring Privy Council rulings! No, the problem is here and here alone. It is not hard to lose the plot, regaining it neigh impossible. We wanted independence without the responsibility, and we have lead our youth by example. We have on our hands exactly what we have acted to produce.
