Funny thing is they are leaving, and in greater numbers. Many Bahamians will applaud this, but we will all pay the price for it. No tourists, no U.S. dollars to prop up our Bahamian dollar. Few foreign investors, fewer decent jobs. Wait 'til the Government proclaims Bahamians cannot hold U.S. dollars. It happened in Jamaica. Won't happen here? Ok, stand by. Wait 'til you cannot find or buy US $ for that trip to Walmart, even from the bank. Government debt payments will take precedent. All these new taxes are the only option left for a country left with no foreigners to tax and pillage. The Government is now willing, and able to feed on us.
Obvious political persecution, notwithstanding a warrant for the above "Libel" or an unlicensed or lapsed licensed shotgun. The objective is to silence him. It will backfire, as Bahamians are starting to realize if him, I could be next. What political bogey man is waiting around my corner? Yours? These guys are rightly afraid of Jail time.
More first world money grabbing tax structures from a Government that is starting to believe we all toil for their benefit. If it didn't come with such onerous and arbitrary implementation it wouldn't be so bad, but the fact is the special few will never pay it.
Prior court case wins have determined that "a licensee of the Port" is a licensee. No differences. However this act gives potential discrimination a whole new potential! Company A gets relieved of these taxes, but Company B gets hit. Maybe Company A is a loyal party supporter. Company B isn't. Maybe A and B compete with each other, but won't for long if treated differently. Maybe company A is Bahamian, and so not yet liable for property tax in the out islands. Maybe Company B is foreign owned and is liable unless exempted. Maybe the Government will not define Freeport as an out island, although east and E.M.R, west end are. who the hell knows! And this is exactly the problem. Total uncertainty coupled with Government arbitrary stupidity. A sure recipe for backwards development.
That we are even having the conversation about possible political persecution, an apparent police custody beating, shows we may have more to fear than we know. It also shows the complete lack of trust or respect the majority have for politicians, Government, police officers, the courts, etc. Rule by personality begets the Ton Ton Macoute mentality of policing, beatings, inhumane treatment, disappearing people, not serving and protecting. If this is our direction we are indeed finished as a decent country.
Actually, it is Bahamian parents who have failed their children first and foremost. The knock on effect is failure in the school structure, exacerbated by overcrowding, malnutrition, lack of self discipline in both children and teachers. Children are very perceptive, you may con them once but not twice. I will add most are not challenged by school "learning by rote" norms. They are bored, a typical result of state education. It is a vicious cycle between teachers and students, as the students get through grade after grade empty handed, teachers left with little job satisfaction. The negative effects on the economy are inevitable and irrecoverable for current generations.
"ripping out Workers Guts"? What kind of garbage is that? Sure, there are unscrupulous Employers, the kind who deduct but do not remit NIB contributions, or do not pay overtime or vacation pay. Just as there are unscrupulous Employees who steal Employers supplies, merchandise or TIME, by sitting around doing nothing to EARN their salary. Is inflammatory rhetoric all the unions can use? Now, how about some audited books so Union members can see where their contributions get to?
Observers on Election day is one thing, makes throwing away ballots harder, but what about the registration process? I've far less confidence in that process given the nonsense we hear about every election run up.
