the more a government tries to Control an economy or supply chain the less they have to tax and control. Fuel is one thing, Auto parts /Meds and Food categories are others they've messed with already with questionable results. They control people, not market prices. They tax the market and people no matter the price.
This ball has been rolling towards us since 2004, and unfortunately Successive administrations have either Kept the public in the dark (intentionally) or ignored it while signing off on it. Ineptitude with no clue the effect it will have. I'm sure the consultation period will be brief, selective and largely ignored. This is gonna hurt short /medium term, long term is the big question mark. I hope (read doubt) they have the tax reciprocity agreements ready to go or the pain will be severe.
We have no accountability in Government because few of we bahamians demand it. Bahamians holler and get ignored, a foreigner speaks and the Government gets upset? Very telling.
Operate the system you have properly before you think about a different system of Governance. A glaring example of failure to this point is the lack of accountability in the elected and the general population. Laws not observed, new laws written to remain unobserved, basic government responsibilities neglected with overstep into all sorts of frivolous wastes of treasury funds.
The problem with the Bahamas chiming in is, What Indigenous peoples did the British meet here? The Spanish wiped out the Indians that were here. Now, where do I file my claim against the Romans? Vikings?
No wonder as there is no decent policy in place to encourage Solar, without a clear cut policy enabling solar, no bank will lend for Solar. Without intelligence at the bec/bpl/urca level, nothing will happen. Code must be followed by Installers, so the Ministry of works inspectors need to be trained and involved, as improperly installed systems can be dangerous to life and property. Realize they don't want energy independent citizens, which is why we sit dead last in the Caribbean for implementation.
Legislate all you wish, you let the violence/murder/vigilante cat out of the bag decades ago, legislation will not put it back in. the law is observed by Honest citizens, not outlaws and politicians.
The rule of law has been subjugated to political will the world over, by the same political operatives that have allowed the rule of law to become optional. The effort to "reclaim" or restore the rule of law requires an extraordinary effort, with the inherent danger of overstepping by the very politics that corrupted it. Public faith in the rule of law is essential but absent in the Bahamas, along with any trust that it could be restored.
