The problem with this particular village idiot, is that he doesn't know he is the village idiot. None of his cronies will point it out, they're too busy profiting by stealing the treasury blind, and selling the country down the Yellow river. The Civil servants won't, most have their little nest egg niches carved out, either by bribery or side jobs and companies. The political Stalwarts won't, they need the crumbs that fall in 5 year cycles. All in all, each and every one of us is responsible, including those in the private sector who pay off, work the corrupt system, kick money back for government contracts, and stay as unnoticeable as possible. God forbid anyone stand for anything.
Until we elect an administration with the guts and moral fortitude to Jail all crooked former politicians and civil servants, we will continue to have this sort of pathetic leadership. Complete and total political mismanagement, micromanagement, coupled with complete erosion of the collective intelligence and ethic within the civil service nets us exactly what we now have: Zero. But they don't care, because they will sit atop the pile whether it is made of gold or dung! Check some Customs officers Bank balances pre and post storm. Check NEMA and Urban Renewals officers bank balances. Check the Carnival Committee bank balances. And check them all for checks written to politicians. And Jail them. They're gonna put the vat to 15% anyway. Minimal impact to people means they're gonna tax rats, dogs and cats must be. Maybe Pigeons.
No need to make it Political Mr. Dames, both Parties are equally guilty of incompetence and political victimization. Perhaps we should be asking what happened to the mobile trailer homes that were set up just outside of West End after the last hurricanes? What about all the private sector assistance that flowed so freely, and most importantly quickly? could it be that Government throws away any and all lessons learned? The NEMA act was poorly written, and terribly applied, creating real questions about leadership quality and ethics. Same goes for Urban Renewal, a pure political tool with no useful purpose.
I agree,"The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreed between the Government and Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) earlier this year was designed to provide investors and businesses, both Bahamian and foreign, with greater clarity and certainty regarding Freeport’s investment regime" Nonsense, it was designed to further water it down, complicate it. "Reforms to the city’s governance were also contained in the MoU, and the Government brought legislation to Parliament to enshrine Freeport’s investment regime in statute law." The Investment regime was "enshrined" in Statute law in 1955, but has been persistently undermined by both PLP and FNM administrations. The law of the land means nothing to either of them, they do not obey it. Lastly, Freeport Jet Wash is already up and running. I do agree though, the citizens have learned much from the prior storms, the Government however, has learned nothing.
The real picture is much more convoluted on the ground, where Insurance payouts (residential) are not spend on re-building, but on trips to Fla shopping, with substandard repairs made with 20% of the funds. Building code is fine, it is not followed however. Throwing NEMA into the mix to gob stop everything up, makes the aftermath worse than the storm! Endless "surveyors" going through communities asking everyone what they need, but nothing ever shows up. B.S. NEMA "advance" paperwork stamping and already we have the police internal affairs investigating "mis-appropriated' donations. They have learned nothing from Francis, Jean and Wilma. Can't figure out which is more useless, NEMA or urban renewal. It is like two new Tribal chiefs fighting for power and territory!
From the Political's it does not surprise me, I pray Greenslade's hands are clean, otherwise we are but a step away from the destruction of the rule of law, from within.
With no foreign investors, not even the bottom feeders arriving, there is no one left to pillage but Bahamians. And the treasury. Notice how many grants and funds they're accessing these days? Does anyone think anything more than 20% actually goes to the designated purpose? Used to be they were too lazy to go after these funds, there was enough to steal off the top of FDI. Not any more. VAT will be increased to 15% next year, mark my words.
Try working on resupply and the Customer/purchasing dept disconnect currently causing complete inconsistency in product availability. I've given up asking store managers or staff what happened to products that have been in the stores before, only to be told "they're in the trailer" or "on the way" Fast moving items come and go in a day, leaving empty shelves 80% of the time. Staff don't even give excuses anymore, which alone belies the disconnect. New stores are great but while you are building, someone else is gonna eat your lunch. your time to fix your logistics is short.
Spending your way to the bottom, while the typical Government method, cannot be spun in any way other than a complete waste of time and money. "estimates"? Carnival is and ever was a placebo designed to get Bahamians to forget their troubles, forget Government ineptitude for a week end and accept the Government induced hangover that follows. A Perry Christie inspired disgrace.
