Avid reader they will try to anyway, just as they want to be the provider of good health via National health insurance.
Does anyone really want their health subject to typical government incompetence?
Typical Government shortages? Typical Government graft? Typical Government organization?
Typical Government timelines?

The_Oracle says...

This is the result of the lack of planning and foresight of the last 40 years.
We have arrived at the inevitable destination of a broke visionless Government being responsible for the accumulated errors of the last and prior broke and visionless Governments, along with their own daily screw ups!
A little common sense tells us that the infrastructural costs are higher per capital than in many other nations due to the far flung nature of the islands.
The compounding factor is the Nassau centric Hub/center of the world mentality of both Government and Civil Service and the Nassau Merchants.
Fix the latter, and consolidate infrastructural costs.
Example: Build a runway elevated well above the surrounding terrain, using fill from the digging of a Harbor/creek as near as possible.
Build a solid concrete terminal with Concrete roof building to serve for transport AND as a Hurricane shelter.
If the islands are hit again, the first flights will not be faced with underwater runways and even if they do get submerged they will quickly drain into the surrounding area.
Also the first flights will find they become natural hubs for the people they are checking on/and supplying!
Yes it will cost money, but is the solution to just dump a few hundred or a thousand more people into Nassau?
Government cannot build housing fast enough for Nassauvians to not make their mortgage payments on now as it is, and a couple days/weeks housing for these displaced out islanders is not going to cut it.
The lack of a non political master plan si glaring, and for either political party to propose one guarantees the other will screw it up or kill it.
BTW, we have been doing that since the Chechi (sp?) report of 1968-69!
A wonderful plan probably still 90% valid!
Ya just can't fix stupid.......

What blows my mind is the number of sightseeing assessment tours the Government is running with different people.
Did the first assessment team forget what they saw? Not take any notes?
These are not Fred Mitchell junkets to China, Cuba, etc etc.
Kudos and well done to BEC and BTC crews!
I saw a truck Loaded way high with new telephone poles heading onto Potters Cay myself.
Good Job!

Yes BahamasPundit, and your article in todays Trib is spot on.
We must get away from blanket condemnation and target individuals who Pillage, thwart, and otherwise misbehave in the name of whatever authority they have been elected/appointed/charged under or with.
We must clear away that type of debris also, to rebuild this country.

Capacity? You have what Capacity? This duplicitous ass ( his word, his original statement) is duplicating the efforts long underway by others not bound down by the need to form committees and appoint very important but useless people to positions of assumed authority with licenses to steal!
NEMA has a warehouse in Freeport which is not needed, NEMA has no Ship, aircraft or transport other than the mailboats already being used by those who got off their butts and got to work! Instead of trying to hijack, thwart or otherwise assert some authority where you have none, go do something useful like study the damn NEMA legislation to see how it went wrong!
Are you forgetting the trailers of food rotting under NEMA control which when discovered they tried to dump it on the Red Cross two years after hurricane Jean?
You, your Government could never match the efficiency or honesty of the sincere, private efforts of people spending their own money to purchase supplies for people they do not even know!
Crawl back in your hole, collect your rent from government for your building in Freeport and leave the real leadership alone. Your committee is useless and political bound over.
Decisions are being made on the fly as needed, people with more common sense and sense of purpose than you will ever have.

Most of us at one time or another hav engaged our mouths before our brains.
I shall give you this one Dr. Minnis.
While some are PLP and some are FNM, mistrust of government is becoming universal.
The Red Cross is an invaluable asset and recognized globally but in the Bahamas it has even less resources that the Government, being NEMA.
Do not stand in the way of the largely immediate and efficient private sector.
Time and time again, it is proven that action from the heart is better than coercion or government response.
All confusion in this situation, has been due to Government lack of action and lack of news.

I disagree Looking on, it is our political class that has failed the Westminster system. Consider the generous outpouring of support from the Bahamian people, which has cost the government nothing thus far. Infrastructure will cost the government initially, but it is the same generous population that will foot that cost also, with 60% added cost for waste, crony contracts, poor workmanship and political pilfering. Meanwhile, remind me again why Nassau is the hub? Is it because they fear loss of control in Nassau?

That the Bahamas Government has no supplies on hand is no surprise.
They forgot that little "essential" while they were busy writing up the NEMA structure and Legislation and appointing political cronies.
It was suggested to them after Francis and Jean how it could be worked between the Private/public sector but they ignored that workable suggestion. (and others)
Government also tried to hijack private efforts as they had no action plan but the private sector were already on the ground just doing it.
NEMA has already "suggested" to private sector effort organizers that they should call NEMA for press announcements when supplies move/go out.
Gotta look good right? stupid stupid stupid.
BTW,still want to know where the satellite phones given to the Government/Nema went.
Shouldn't they have been issued at the start of hurricane season?
Confirmed to be working at the start of the hurricane season?
Collect them back in November and keep safe/secure.
damned fools.

The_Oracle says...

SP they were given Sat phones years ago, they had them during Francis and Jean.
but do you think they can find them now?
or have they looked after them?
charged them up if they do have them?
No doubt the satellite airtime accounts are overdue/cut off as well.

The_Oracle says...

So the Government failed to warn people?
Sorry to say but you haven't seen Government failure yet, that always comes in the aftermath.
Private sector efforts will as always outstrip Government efforts, in spite of Government interference.
Sadly Government incompetence fouls everything up.
Prior experience gives us this "teachable moment"
