Certainly ethics within the house is obscure, nefarious self serving agendas are intentionally obscured, but still leak out of the closet thank goodness.
This statement illustrates a major problem: "He explained that Mr Christie was the one that first believed in the project, understood its vision and allowed it to move forward". This is where we, the Bahamas has gone wrong. We have a constitution that outlines our Freedoms, rules, rights, but we opted for Micro-management by an incompetent! (actually a string of them, surrounded by more of them) We, the people instead have ceded our entire existence to a single man! In addition, the single man (and the other damn fool that preceded him) has us bound over with multiple "strings" with the Chinese! Ropes more like, in which they tie knots. (Hutchinson, loans, financing, development, U.N. votes, etc etc) So who screwed who here? Look in the mirror fellow Bahamians.
Just a different "creative" way to filter treasury funds down through the rank and file in the Party. After all, it is their unspoken mandate, isn't it? If one could see the actual skimming and padding......
I can just see our illustrious contingent, scheming their way across the oceans, embracing their own convoluted "solutions" only to get shut down by the real chess masters. I think we are about to find out how far down the yellow river we have ben sold.
Akin to closing the barn door once the horses are out! If there was one whit of intelligence in Government this should have been seen coming decades ago. Foreign visitors come here, see potential, decide to invest, get preferential treatment (unless they fall afoul of Government/ministers/island administrators, usually after they've invested/been bled out) and go for it. Bahamians are not afforded the same treatment, unless they are politically connected and can convince the mindless that they need preferential treatment/protection/favors. Always something in it for the politicians/family as well. As long as Bahamians can take from someone else to gain themselves, nothing will move forward.
While it is probably a good idea for some form of licensing to be established, restricting it to Bahamians is following the taxi plate fiasco that Pindling created, that we still suffer with. Note that taxis now share a very marginalized service. Letting the Bahamian Bonefishing interests "corner" the market will kill the activity, nor will government see a dime if the Bonefishing guides collect the fees. A $600 fee will stifle competition and make everywhere else cheaper. That fee is over and above accommodations and amenities as well i'm sure. Perhaps a closer look at Mr. Smiths "camp" to assess his market share, This may just be a ploy to increase his traffic by force, not by quality of service.
What good will more boats do when they cannot hold onto the perps when they catch them? The one from the GB/Berries heist slipped his cuffs and dove into the harbor and got away! Probably casing his next boat now if he hasn't already stolen another! Competencies is what is missing, in maintenance, discipline, maritime skills and logistics. While even the U.S. 7th fleet could not entirely cover Bahamian waters, a damn sight better job could be done. The courts aught to start charging them with piracy on the high seas, not boat theft! Again, incompetencies abound.
And bury us all in more bureaucracy. They are creating more Mini 'MaCoutes by the day. Standards are needed but once again, the costs associated will hit the private sector, unless the standards from the manufacturing country are observed and accepted. Rocket Science? no, but Rube Goldberg is a National hero. We can complicate everything beyond recognition.
