Most misinformation has come from the Government itself, creating confusion in their efforts to veil and conceal a) the impact, b) the pressure, c) how bad the government fiscal picture is. d) the result of not acting Officials from the ministry of finance both past and present, in kicking the political football back and forth over the last year have themselves raised the spectre of devaluation of the Bahamian $$ Claims of no inflation all the way to VAT stimulating the economy have come from the side that aught to know better. Is this through malfeasance or misfeasance? Given their proclivity for adhering to the truth........ I'd say they've been outright lying. The only bright edges on the horizon are a) perhaps we will realize we have been lied to and cannot trust those we have elected b) We may well see the end of the PLP on this, and for that matter the rigid PLP FNM blind worship that has us in this mess. I'm not holding my breath......
Before anyone embraces something new, they must first let go of what they have, be it legit or ill gotten, and that has not happened yet. There is not one organization or soul that will be unaffected by VAT. the rise in the cost of living, the record keeping and accounting requirements, or the penalties for non compliance. The landscape is changing, and we do not like change.
They don't want them beyond the regional political presence they can buy from them for pittance. deporting them to China could potential destabilize that country! Maybe the U.S. will sell them the Embassy property when they roll out and take their U.S. Visa's with them....
I do not know how long Mr.Myers has been around but the Government has always kept secret any changes to duty rates, whether up or down, under the argument "sometimes you win, sometimes you lose" (actual words uttered by more than one comptroller of customs) While they recently issued a list of "recommended reduced duty rates" I do not hold out much hope that any rates will actually get reduced. That will be a Cabinet decision, the same notorious for ignoring any sensible recommendations from any quarter including from paid consultants! Now, a virtual warehouse will lessen the impact on cash flow for affected businesses, but would be virtually impossible to implement. An accounting nightmare. what you are both proposing would be a nightmare, as to prove pre-November existing inventory quantity against Nov/Dec inventory imports against post Jan1st import quantity and sales against all three is insane. Good lord isn't it bad enough the Ministry of Finance knows not what it is doing, we now have Private sector befuddlement!
