Hear Hear Banker ! We were warned decades ago, one only has to reference a speech given by B.K. Bonamy, former Commisioner of Police at C.O.B. when he returned from a regional conference in Jamaica which had to be in the late 70's. The Man came back and spelled it out, Jamaican levels of violent crime would migrate north, only to be ignored by the Government of the day.( And subsequent administrations) The private sector stepped up to the plate, only to be spurned by the PLP then FNM Governments over the ensuing 20 years. Now we reap the rewards of our folly.
The Bahamas Negotiating team was reduced to two people, namely Zhivargo Laing and Raymond winder, as too much information was leaking out of the Negotiation team of a dozen or so people.(Zero private sector feedback/participation) Bear in mind most Caribbean countries have hundreds of personnel, and European countries literally thousands. Information on the Bahamas position is best learned by accessing the Barbados, Jamaican,Trinidadian and Guyanese government websites. Most Bahamians in the private sector are completely unprepared and really couldn't care less it appears. Non the less, we as a country are beholden to implement, comply and have been committed to this path predominantly by the FNM. The PLP, as always, are playing catch up, and are forced to implement things like VAT, courtesy of Ingraham and Laing. Who is on our current negotiation team? Where is the public discourse/participation? Weekly Statements from Mr. Pinder does not cut it! On the face of it, it looks like he is bouncing all over the place, but in reality every aspect of the Bahamian economy is having to comply and open up for direct foreign investment/participation.
"Pot calling the Kettle black", no pun intended. Both Parties have their weaknesses, very evident, both can and have been vindictive, Neither have the best interests of the country and its people at heart, but both profess to. Discussion in the house has become largely irrelevant, and irreverent. Now, go count foreigners, they must be invading with their money!
Oh great, another payout Bureau, funded by the taxpayers! If the laws were applied across the board, the penalty for driving un-insured would be a sufficient deterrent to driving uninsured/un-authorized. Same with all crime, where is the deterrent? Chinese should have built a prison to hold 20,000 inmates, accommodate them all, no bail!!!
No no no, we simply haven't gotten the right foreign consultants to tell us what is wrong with us............. Above DeepDrop2 said update the laws, Perhaps we should try applying the existing laws properly before we screw with them, We suck at self control, self respect, and self governance. We have failed the rules.
I believe Dr. Darville has already been wined and dined/neutralized by the Port Authority, and will not do a damn thing except accept their invites and goobersmooch. The insidious nature of the Port coupled with weak Governance of the country make any change highly unlikely. As to the Budget Communication, a simple game of cups.
I believe that would be $3.00 on top of the current 200%+ duty/tax on Cigarettes, making a pack around $9!
of course, the rubber hits the road when all of this kicks in, as his "lapses" into the local vernacular and the generalities of his statements leave much to be questioned.
The Grand Bahama Port Authority Solar/Alt energy position is Yes we are Solar friendly, No, you cannot grid tie, No you cannot use it as your primary power source. Yes, you can use it as a standby Generating System! Being that the Port Authority charges the power co. a "thru put/generation tax" on every KWH generated (or Sold) (which used to be a tax per barrel of fuel used charge) They don't want solar /Alt energy to diminish their revenue, which it would. If the Government would simply declare Solar to be allowable, subject to accepted Global standards for Electrical operation/connection/safety inspection, Solar will take off here, But they seem pre-occupied with how they will make money from it, and can't seem to decide which foreign company they will allow to do it (for BEC use only), On Crown land of course! Consultants with special interest abound. Tis always the way......
Why varied rates required per Island? While fuel transport costs, and inefficiencies in scale of generation played a role in conventional Fossil fuel generation, Solar/Wind have no transport costs beyond initial equipment install. Scaling should be almost linear island by island.
I would have expected better from Mr. Brown. Having made his comment it appears he has no understanding of the importance of the rule of law being impartial, and transparent, and having the appearance of being done. Beatings in back rooms has no place in a civilized society with rules and foremost, the simple principal of "Innocent until proven guilty". Not to say the courts here work, they do not. They are as dysfunctional as every other aspect of our society. We are not so far removed from the Ton Ton Macoute of Duvalier infamy. Which I'm sure Mr. Brown would not want to be judged by.
