The Government cannot grant to one Bahamian, they would then have to grant to many. Favoritism is defacto, but not overt. Imagine that, a Government that becomes an enabler for all Bahamians as opposed to a controller of. Foreigners get what they want, be it land, concessions, or paid for reports, and go about their business happy. Bahamians must beg, endure stalling, see their vision given to others or outright denied without any explanation. And we elect them over and over. Not that any of the other aspirants would be any different. We are, by our own hands victims of our own vises and culture.
With fuel prices increasing the cruise lines need close to the US destinations, Apparently no one in government was astute enough to see that the shut down gave the Bahamas an opportunity to assess real time revenue losses vs. projected/feared. The re-opening was a missed opportunity to re-negotiate port opening criteria and taxation, not bend over and dribble on their shoes.
Neophyte idiots don't mention the 3rd possibility, no job no severance either. Zero company income, induced by Government shutdowns/lockdowns/gerrymandering of the economy has left some businesses with zero revenue. How does one pay out severance with no money?
Wells were scattered around Freeport with a stand pipe attached, (no pressurized, specifically for fire trucks to pump from.but so many of those rotted off at the water line underground. Lack of Maintenance. I've seen a few that just fell over, rusted out. The water table is sometimes as little as 3 ft below the ground surface. However pumping salt water will destroy whatever doesn't burn!
And while we are at it, why don't we have a proper analysis of exactly how much cruise ship revenue to the Bahamas was lost when they were shut down? Bay st retail etc, landing fees - reimbursements to the cruise lines of said fees/taxes etc.
Why wouldn't they think they can bend over another administration, they did the last one right? Someone should educate Government with a dictionary, "capitulate" and "Negotiate" are not synonyms!
Politicians can only wipe away the tears if they were the ones who caused them in the first place, but they only produce more tears. But you are right Birdie and the same is true of the PLP, the source of all Political spin offs and break aways. Irrespective of the party in power, they all suffer the same folly, only to fast to point at the failings of the other, then rinse and repeat.
How about appointing based on qualification and merit? So simple but so far beyond the Political machinery's grasp. For that matter, why not elect based on merit and not populism? Or how about we vote against incompetence and graft, seeing as that is how we appear to vote, against personality.
