Corruption is so steeped in this country that the top levels of govt services are likely staffed by people who simply got political promotion. At minimum we need to change the way we select the Commissioner. The Commissioner should not be the PM's hand picked man checking in with the office before he acts on complaints. All of this leads to what we see today. The "straw". The camel down the road in a pothole with a broken back.
The govt has been at this for let's say 40years? By now just like any business they should have figured out their customer ebb and flow cycle and adjusted processes to suit. A printer not working does not cut it as an excuse. A move to another location 2.5 years in does not cut it. 30 million dollars on digitization for this? Inexcusable. This is the result of bad design and coopting someonelses innovation and implementing it badly.
Add to this the police's decision to implement road blocks. Whose idea is this? It's a giant waste of time because the likelihood that someone couldnt get a drivers license printed, couldnt get a license plate couldnt get their car licensed has increased 1000 fold, meaning youre wasting your time checking non-issues and affecting every business in the country holding up all the workers.
Agreed. I don't know why govt after govt tries to take this stance that there are no problems and all they need is better PR.
They need to get rid of corruption in Parliament. All of the problems flow from there. The breakdown of services everywhere, the lack of money for infrastructural work, the poor planning and the borders that allow guns drugs sex and human trafficking. All of it flows from corruption at the top and this drive to amass money illegally and/or unethically no matter the cost.
"*police have been testing and evaluating the technology for two years*"
With the Commissioner saying within the last 2 months that they dont have the resources to stop traffic violations everywhere? I highly doubt theyve been testing for 2 years. Likely a highly nuanced definition of "*evaluating*"
I wouldnt sign up for it until the public gets some assurance on how privacy and individual rights would be protected and the swift remedy when theyre violated is given. It's clear to me that politicians make draconian rules because they're assured it wont apply to them. Did you see Mr Pintard protesting about one of his FNM leadership being taken in for questioning? Had the FNM been in power he too would be talking about being willing to give up liberties. One of the warnings during COVID was that govt would use the pandemic as an excuse to overreach into totalitarian control. The problem isnt that the police need to lockdown everything, the problem is theyve been doing nothing. It's been the Wild West out here. And the court record of that police mass shooting in Blair in addition to the sexually motivated assault of a woman simply walking home by an ASP with still no response from the Commissioner months later, the 4 month wait to simply bring charges of rape against a sitting MP among a long list of "*apparent*" abuses leaves very little confidence of police ability to self govern
"*We always felt when I was at the Ministry of Tourism that if the story was below the fold or on page 3, it would help, but it screams from the headlines."*
how do you put 20 murders below the fold? I wonder if our politicians get it. I dont think they do. I remembrr Carl Bethel during the pandemic speaking about Bahamians who cant "behave". Desmond Bannister and others cackling about cutting down trees on the seashore to discourage Bahamians from visiting the beach. It doesnt matter which side they act as if the citizens are "*the other*", and too dumb to grasp that what happening right before their eyes isnt really happening.
Please tell the lady having a breakdown in the road remembering bullets flying through her car that shes overreacting and to stop scaring the tourists. While youre at it, tell the 7 year old who got shot that things arent as bad as he thinks, after all, no tourists were hurt..
"*He is urging the government to intervene immediately in the matter which he feels could harm the island’s economy and tourism.*"
This doesnt seem like it has any effect on tourism, since tourists can still board from the US. Seems like 100% of the impact is on Bahamians returning home with large furniture
"*Additionally, he said the vessel serves as a shipping option for Bahamian passengers to ship furniture and other large items when they travel*"
Why do Bahamians have the attitude that business models should altered to accommodate them? And I'm speaking specifically to cases that aren't disenfranchising Bahamians or employing unethical or environmentally damaging practices. If a business doesnt suit your needs discontinue your support.
This is a **cruise** ship, not a cargo ship. Your argument cannot be if you take this away I wont be able to ship furniture. That's probably exactly why they stopped the service in the first place, to avoid this nuisance cargo.
Good. This is the first step. I still believe "*the shack burn down*" was an inadequate explanation in 2022.
This lack of accountability everywhere has to stop. It's a precursor for corruption. And murder. Because corruption breeds lawlessless. Let's see the PM give a stern warning to his ministers and caution them that corruption will be dealt with swiftly with the laying of new bills specifically targeted at rooting out corruption in parliament, the police force and customs and immigration.
The corruption eradication gateway starts with accountability. A BEC senior manager should not have been able to put pressure on an employee to pay vendors without proof of work being completed. The RM Bailey contractor should not have gotten any work without a contract and evidence of quality inspections. Nygard should not have been able to operate a sex trafficking operation from Lyford Cay.
