I will leave it for you and @Chucky to explain why Airbus was recently forced to cease production of the A380, the largest passenger aircraft in the world. Bigger just doesn't always mean better or lead to economies of scale. I can think of countless other similar examples that defy your silly belief that bigger always produces economies of scale; but, frankly, I don't see it as my mission to do your homework.
Think much, much longer than 6 months......think in terms of years. Public health officials and the traveling public (vacationers) around the world have finally woken up to the serious health risks posed by the inherent filthiness of the huge floating hotels operated by the cruise line companies. These very greedy companies simply could not resist building bigger and bigger ships in recent decades. In their quest for greater and greater profits, the cruise line companies transformed their business model into one which put their profits ahead of passenger safety.
The monstrous ships must be at sea loaded with passengers for a minimum number of days each year in order to generate the great profits expected from their operation. But this necessarily means less time in port for proper intensive cleaning which in turn means they quickly become filthy incubators of all kinds of pathogens as evidenced by the many norovirus outbreaks on board them in recent years. They may look clean to the passenger's naked eye, but under a microscope the worst kinds of dastardly microbes and frightening pathogens are all too easily found everywhere. The time in port that it would take to intensively clean these gigantic ships would render them unprofitable to operate. Bottom line - they are much too big to be kept clean and still be operated profitably. That's the conondrum, plain and simple.
The travelling public and governments all around the world will no longer be supporting the very unsafe business model of these monstrous filthy floating hotels now that it's well known they serve as the ideal breeding ground for deadly pathogens like the Red China Virus.
And to think the Minnis-led government foolishly worked overtime putting all of our country's fragile economic eggs in the cruise line basket, the bottom of which has now dropped out for the likes of Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Disney thanks to the Red China Virus. The inability to govern resulted in the low hanging fruit be picked by Minnis, D'Aguilar and Turnquest rather than any serious effort aimed at desperately needed economic diversification.
Assuming the Italian scenario, mainly because the Minnis-led government failed to implement rigorous containment measures much earlier, and using Sands's voodoo extrapolation math, the 4 confirmed cases from 117 tests indicates as many as 687 deaths may be likely. The Italian scenario anticipates 67% of the population eventually being infected with the death rate currently at about 7.5% of those infected. Italy's higher death rate is a real possibility for the Bahamas given that so many Bahamians already have one or more high risk pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, obesity, hyper-tension, etc. which makes them especially vulnerable. We desperately need much more testing as soon as possible across a much greater swath of our population in order to gain a better understanding of what we can expect as this Red China Virus takes hold in our society.
4/117 x 400,000 x 67% x 7.5% = 687 deaths
Perhaps the ball rooms at the Baha Mar Convention Centre should be staged now with plenty of temporary beds (cots) spaced apart as much as possible. The more proactive we are the better because the usual reactive mode could be very costly in terms of total lives lost.
You either don't shop at any of his food stores or you're comfortably seated on his gravy train. Anyone who has been regularly shopping at Super Value or Quality Markets knows first hand about the outrageous price gouging which Rupert Roberts would happily have you believe is exclusively attributable to customs duty and VAT.
Why hasn't Minnis limited buying at all food stores during the first hour and a half of each business day to persons age 60+ who are the most vulnerable to the life-threatening Red China Virus? And what has Minnis done to ensure the food stores are being properly cleaned each night after closing, to ensure they are as sterile as possible when they open for business the next morning? Are the check-out areas, door and cart handles, etc. all being cleaned on a regular basis throughout the day?
Have steps been taken to prevent panic bulk buying and to accommodate the elderly who are unable to stand in line for long periods of time to gain entry to food stores? Minnis must order that such measures be taken and rigorously enforced because the very greedy Rupert Roberts is not going to be inclined to do anything unless he is literally forced to do so.
There's a lot one could say here but why bother......all of the many great negatives for our country associated with the Atlantis property are too well known and have been mirrored by the Baha Mar property. Thousands of Bahamians employed by multiple much smaller hotel properties would have been infinitely better than the Atlantis/Baha Mar business model. That's just common sense. Kerzner got every conceivable concession imaginable, made a fortune the greater portion of which was repatriated abroad, and then abandoned the Bahamas and the Bahamian people for Dubai at the most opportune time.
But you can't fault Kezner as an astute businessman with a keen sense of timing for taking full advantage of our brain-dead governments led by Ingraham and Christie alike. They were both fools well played by Kerzner for his benefit much more so than the benefit of the Bahamian people. Now we have to contend with most of our country's fragile economic eggs having been foolishly put by Minnis in the very greedy and profiteering basket of the foreign cruise ship companies. Not a pretty picture from the standpoint of grave economic vulnerability for the vast majority of Bahamians going forward.
What will happen to all the meats and other food products, and soaps, shampoos, cleansers, etc., in various storage facilities located on this mammoth property? Will Fook Enterprises, the owners of Baha Mar, be arranging for these now scarce items to be distributed to the many Red Chinese nationals living on New Providence? Perhaps Sandy Sands knows what will be done with Baha Mar's large inventory of these items.
