Congratulations on a well written, timely and thoughtful article exploring the "FNM Leadership dilemma".
The trouble seems to be that while many in the the FNM were happy that HAM accepted the leadership role after the FNM were thrashed at the last General Election, perhaps at that time no one else wanted the thankless task of picking up the pieces of the FNM, but they never really wanted him as their leader on a permanent basis! That's like asking someone you know to house-sit your Family Island cottage, but when you want to move back in, they refuse to move out!
It must be obvious to all that the leadership dilemma MUST be solved, and that the minority of "mean spirited" and " sore losers" are damaging the party in a substantial way. Whatever needs to be done, please just do it! Get over the petty bickering and power plays, unite behind your leader, whomever that is, because united you stand, divided you fall!! This needs your urgent attention because time is short!
Selecting a Prime Minister is not a beauty pageant!! This is not a Mr. and Mrs. Bahamas contest! .......... If it was, Mr. and Mrs. McCartney would probably win!!
What about evaluating those aspects of Mr. McCartney's character that would, or wouldn't, make him the formidable leader the Bahamas needs??
I am always suspicious of "Pretty Men";..... like beautiful women their good looks open doors and they make progress in their careers that they may not deserve! This is especially true in modern politics, which has become a battle of personality cults.
If Mr. McCartney wants to be taken seriously, he needs to show the Bahamian electorate that he is more than sound bites, dressed up in an attractive wrapper!
For our system of government to work we need an active and vocal opposition to hold the government's feet to the fire and demand accountability. What would Milo Butler, Cecil Wallace Whitfield, and Hubert Ingraham have to say, if they sat in the HOA as members of the Opposition? How would they be more effective than our present Opposition? In what ways would they highlight the mistakes and transgressions of our present government and how would they capitalize on these to force the government to clean-up their act??
If there is even a grain of truth in the comments supposedly made by Keith Bell, then this is cause for great concern. If the PLP needs " The Criminal Vote" to get elected, and if being deliberately soft on crime is a ploy to maximize this vote, then this country truly is on the road to lawlessness and destruction!
So now "a teachable moment" is the new buzzword for a monumental government f-up?
Of course, every mistake that anyone ever makes is a "teachable moment" to everyone involved, or even anyone observing, or anyone learning about the screw-up!!
But what we want and need is a government that does not make monumental mistakes, and which doesn't then annoint its mistakes as "teachable moments" to deflect from the fact that the mistakes should never have been made in the first place!
In other words what we want and need from our government is simply, competence.... and accountability!!!!...... Surely that is not too much to ask!!
Stay in school a little longer! Your solution is to give the reins of government to a bunch of untried novices who come to us with a series of utopian ideals, but with zero experience of successful governance!!!
Getting elected in The Bahamas requires a party infrastructure, campaign experience and boots on the ground that only the PLP and the FNM possess!
Learn the history of the electoral process in The Bahamas!!
Small new political parties in The Bahamas, led by Self Important, Leadership seeking, Egomaniacal Political Operatives, always fail!!!!
Ask Branville McCartney, B.J.Nottage, Fred Mitchell, Henry Bostwick and all of the other "Wannabe Prime Ministers" of the last eight election cycles what happened to their dreams of glory... they all failed!!!
It took the FNM fifteen years or more to defeat the PLP, and the FNM started off with a huge advantage over the cluster of mini parties that bit the dust during the past 40 years! The FNM started as the Dissident Eight, that became the Free PLP and then became the FNM, and from the very beginning they had eight members sitting in the HOA!!
The DNA, without a single member in the HOA, has been forced to sit on the sidelines since the last election. McCartney's attempt to start his own party so he could be Prime Minister has been an abject failure!!
Bahamian voters must face reality; both FNM and PLP are less than perfect! Voting for the least flawed parties is our only valid choice!
