Does an Acting Prime Minister has the authority to carry out such action? I am just curious and if the post had expired and only extended by one week then so what? Mr. Rollins statement will definitely have a long term affect on the Party. Why fire someone for voicing his opinion ( the PLP constitution can never have more authority than the Constitution, though some people believe that) yet Wells who overstep his authority , scenario had to be investigated. These guys a bunch of political weaklings showboating and the wannabe PM Brave Davis is clueless'
Yet we have an 'accounting firm' leading our energy sector reform, no direction in putting legislation in place to accommodate the de-monopolization of our energy sector and every Tom,Dick and Harry trying to sell us pipe dreams over alternative energy.
Alfred Sears is the Council President ,Frankie Wilson is a major contributor. Duhhhh! This the Bahamas folks, even though we never was know for growing bananas, we have all the semblances of a Banana Republic. We should change our name to the Commonwealth of Bananas.SMH
My question is replace the political culture with what? Politics no matter where you go is flawed. We need a renewing of the minds and change our entire way of thinking. I had a chance to see Renward Wells in action some time ago in a US city airport praising the benefits of coal fired power plants (really!). Apparently from what I gathered him and a former FNM MP and some other persons had just come of a fact finding from another country and he was proud as peacock! The leader of this administration has been letting all his MPs do whatever they see fit and now the chickens have come home to roost. Mr. Minnis on the other hand is simply avoiding the topics of VAT , gambling etc. because PGC is just continuing the policies of HAI. At least he smart enough to know not to be hypocritical just for politics sake. In our terms 'he een saying nothing, cause he can't say nothing.'
And this is what privatization in this present state in our country present, a private monopoly. Before competition comes in the Govt must divest some of its share in BTC and offer them up to the public. No one, I believe, will come in as a competitor, with the Govt. owning a "phantom" 51% share. Second it would be a grave disservice to the Treasury of the Bahamas by introducing direct competition with public assets without first divesting them for true liberalization ,which will be soon forced upon us (WTO). Is there enough market share for serious competition without the Bahamas somehow partaking in the Haitian market? I understand we still have a fiber optic cable sitting dormant between here and Haiti. Competition sound good but is it really feasible without first retooling our entire telecom structure. Finally are Bahamians preparing themselves to become owners of the telecom industry instead of mere consumers. Everyone crying about "getting better service" but few thinking about financial empowerment. Instead of wasting time and money fighting over 1% we should be positioning ourselves to own a share of the market. Sad! Even so called Bahamian businessmen are either throwing up a smokescreen so they can hog up things or they are really short sighted. No wonder business suffering in this country.
I don't know what it is but it is like Grand Bahama is not a part of the Bahamas. A private company holds the monopoly there and the rates are ridiculously high, higher than NP. Privatization does very little unless there is an open market with serious competitors. All you really do is pass the monopoly from the government hands to one private entity hands (BTC as an example). The consumer is still stuck with non competitive rates and mediocre services with the serious downside being in our case, profits being funneled out of the country. If liberalization of the market cannot be accomplished then the whole exercise turns from privatization to re-monopolization.
There is a reality about alternate energy sources that Bahamians seem not to recognize. The present pursuit of alternate energy sources is not being done to replace oil with cheaper fuels, thus savings on the consumer part, it is being done to lessen the carbon footprint to help sustain our planet. All these so called alternate energy sources have there downside. The key is conservation of energy and pushing for the manufacturing and purchasing of more efficient energy consuming equipment.
Bahamian businesses are seeking short sighted goals. Yes the key is improving profitability, and cost of energy is a major factor, but let's not be blind to the long term effects that can happen to a rushed process. Legislation hasn't even been tabled to change the Electricity Act yet we taking on bidders. Wow it is amazing we expect to do everything blindly, throw up a pray and hope all works out well.
Intelligence gathering, spying is the pillar stone of any developed nation. Anyone politician who does not know that is clueless to world affairs. We have as a business partner, China, who has one of the most intricate and advanced spy network in the modern world. Do we think China is spying on us? Snowden is a traitor and probably was a spy himself planted by the USSR. Spy games have been over the years an intense display of geo-political chess that will continue to go on as long as nations exist. We are being spied on ,will continue to be spied and will be spied on by not only the US.
