The crowd was made of Bahamians whether its number men, plp ,fnm, dna, rich, poor etc. Bahamians period. I am glad to see that we can come into the Age of Agitation.Instead of criticizing at least be somewhat supportive.
This will not stop. No Fiscal Responsibility Act, no Freedom of Information Act all hot button topics the FNM propagated on their election platform to sway the minds of the electorate. 12.5% then next year 15% then next 6 months 20% . Who or what will stop the madness?
Let's be reminded this form of taxation is all new.Let's demand the government put mechanisms in place to regulate the entire process and don't give them carte blanche to increase taxation. The PLP did not put regulatory measures in place so does that means they shouldn't either? C,mon people. That should be a real and relevant fear not all these rhetoric the political mouthpieces keep uttering. History have shown these kind of action have sparked civil disobedience and even bloody revolts ( American Revolution). So before you sit on yall high horses, THINK not out of fear but out of reason.
At least they taking a stand for an issue they believe in whether you think it is right or wrong not hiding behind a keyboard, and computer screen criticizing instead of analyzing.
How about this. Tell us first where the already collected tax is going...besides the Consolidated Fund. Better yet formulated and table and pass A Freedom of Information Act (yall remember that) so that you as a Govt. will be legislated thus compelled to tell the Bahamian people how every dollar is spent so we don't have to be "kicking the can down the road". People while these are all good advice my only concern is that at one point VAT collection at 7.5% was at $1bill at one point then Minister was bragging that in one quarter the govt. was collecting some $200 mill! The FNM claim they wanted to see where the monies were all they while hinting that the PLP was stealing it.....only to come and say ,when they came to power, they never said they steal but it right there. What kind of madness....now no mention of what has been already collected just a bunch of political rhetoric and a further tax increase...lunacy,smokescreen. With no mechanism to reign in govt. spending we will be going through this same cycle again and again as the learned Minister is mentioning. You could collect taxes until Thy Kingdom and the same effect. Our problem is we arent use to this sort of tax collection so any man in a suit can run some game on us. Bahamians demand more!
This is pure scare tactics and Mr. Johnson is only giving half of the truth. Barbados is one of the so called "devoloping"countries who has been following the IMF advice from jumpstart. What is seem to be lacking in his advice that Barbados has 17.5% VAT. They could not tax themselves into monetary and fiscal success thus they have now to go back to the IMF who is now so willing to lend them more money. This is pure madness. Yes we do need to look at Barabados and realize with this course that this govt. wants to set we will be even deeper in the IMF. hands. I thought taxes main purpose is for govt. revenue to improve their monetary and fiscal situation on their own... not to facillate more borrowing! Folks we heading the same road as Barbados with this new charted course.
Gambling is what makes up the lion share of our tourism industry without it most of these anchor hotels would be drier than the Sahara Desert. If you going to close down the webshops and gambling so morally wrong then shut down the hotel casinos. You cannot legislate morality. We suppose to live in a democratic society grant it there need to be more oversight and regulations (tax them fairly) with the so called "local' industry but why should a foreigner come to my home and do what I am not able to do. Yes there are social ills that can be attributed to gambling but also there are many social ills associated with alcohol but no cry to stop issuing liquor licences. Grow up Bahamas! Yinna want big city amenities without paying big city prices. You cant have one without the other. If you don't partake in gambling fine but don't stop others from participating in a perfectly legal activity for their enjoyment or detriment. That's what a free society about.
Bahamasair Holdings need to manage their website better. There SEO (search engine optimization) is too low which leading people to dodgy third party sites where fraudulent actions can go undetected for long periods which I can bet were the initial points of transaction for this fraud.
The AUTEC base must always be considered when thinking about any type of development in Andros. It has even been suggested by some that the presence of this joint military installation is a key factor in the under development of Andros.
I personally ,in jest, take offence to the title of this article "would be leader" I believe what should be included in its title "wanna be" leader. For the past two occasions Butler have appealed to the general Bahamian population through traditional and social media that she should be leader of the FNM. Doesn't she know that the general population have very little input on this decision . Only the delegates of the FNM who make up a portion of the general population can decide this, unlike a general election. You should have spent all of your time and resources on trying to woo the FNM delegates on your bid for leadership. It is quite obvious that her and her cohorts do not understand their own party process as they were seemingly taken by surprise by the response before their cowardly resignation. Weren't their ears to the ground of their party? Weren't they students of their party mechanisms before their bid? Did they not perfect the method that would ensure their victory? If they were negligent in these aspects of party politics then how can the general supporters entrust them to secure victory for their party in a general election? Through their short-sightedness of the elitist's mindset they felt they were entitled to a victory! Sadly their disillusionment was displayed to their non support. LBT isn't and as long as her present attitude continues can , in my opinion never considered to be a "would be " leader just a "wanna be" leader.
Short term jobs if any. How many people can a marina employ realistically without a hotel and resort attached? The long term effects can be very devastating to our environment. I think all these greedy policy makers have long forgotten that it is our environment ,sun, sand and sea that makes us unique. We are mere stewards and if we destroy our environment more than the young people will turn to crime because we in essence destroy a pillar industry.
