Wow! Miss Burrows really picked that so-called "Plan" apart! The FNM should have followed the DNA's lead and just call their 'Plan' a 'Policy' instead. Details to be provided at a later date.
Even though we live in a democratic society and we have freedom in choosing what we want to eat, I fully agree with this assessment. We need to have a moratorium on the amount of fast food establishments allowed in this country. Soon we will have a fast food joint, liquor store, web shop and church on every commercial corner of this country.
Didn't Mr. Christie say something similar to the statement that Bahamians could pray to God for help but we still gatta come to him in the end. Well Mr. PM you can't have it both ways! Don't blame God for your bad governance! This is on you and your band of incompetent acolytes. Bahamians are now looking to you for solutions that you don't have!.
Grand Bahama desperately needs new investors to take the island to another level. The quality of the hotel infrastructure is not up to par with those in a lot of the other 'exciting' island destinations. Tourists constantly complain that there is nothing to do on the island, service is often bad, and the general state of the island looks run-down, even prior to Hurricane Matthew. This revolving door of hotel and casino management companies will continue until Grand Bahama gets some quality investment that creates jobs on the island. Trump may give the Bahamas another lifeline by closing off Cuba to Americans again. We should not squander the opportunity to improve our state of affairs in our country.
Despite people having freedom of choice to eat what they want, presenting us with all of these unhealthy options for cheap food does not bode well for our healthcare system and its associated high costs. I don't blame the owners for wanting to expand their investments, but just like the webshops, the government needs to give serious consideration to limiting the amount of fast food restaurants in the Bahamas or the high rates of obesity and illnesses like diabetes will continue to plaque the Bahamas. The people that own these restaurants do not eat this type of food so why should we. Our island, especially the over-the-hill areas, is proliferated with these places. Let's get back to our family island basics like growing your own food via backyard farming and cooking healthy meals at home.
This is a guy that Sir Lynden Pindling did not even care for that much and were often at odds with him. After his passing all of a sudden Mr. Mitchell starts drooling all over the good part of Sir Lynden's legacy like they were best friends. Nowadays he is all up in anything related to Sir LOP. All of these politicians are real opportunists!
Let's call this referendum what it really is. It is just a 'test run' for the PLP government to gauge the feelings of the electorate before the general elections. It also helps to sell one of the PLP's campaign messages that they "Believe in Bahamians." They get to kill two birds with one stone if the referendum is successfully passed. More than likely a successful passage will lead to the calling of an early election to 'ride the euphoric wave' and catch the FNM and DNA off-guard while they are still trying to figure things out.
This is a great letter which calls out the real reason why this country is in the mess it is in right now! Anyone that is willing to come in and clean up this mess must be willing to live with the fact that they will probably only last one term as the majority of the Bahamian populace will not vote for someone that does not give political favours or encourage graft, corruption and slackness. As Mr. Potcake Miller suggested, this stuff is so ingrained in our culture it is never going to be completely eliminated. This is the reality of our 'Christian' nation.
Obviously this is Dr. Minnis' hatchetwoman who was brought in to do and say the things that he wants but is reluctant to because of his position. Dr. Minnis' 'General' seems to be effective at carrying out her instructed duties. The FNM party is so screwed. At this juncture, Toggie and Bobo could run as independent candidates and still get more votes than the FNM.
Very well-written opinion piece and astute observations. I also think Mr. Sears is the man that could improve the image of the PLP party and even bring new supporters into the fold. However, he would have to get rid of all vestiges of the old guards currently in cabinet to start paving a new way forward for the country. Mr. Sears certainly has the intellect and statesman-like demeanor to represent the Bahamas well locally and internationally. Much to Mr. Ortland Bodie's chagrin, his demigod Mr. Brave Davis does not have a snowball's chance in Hell of becoming the next Prime Minister. Nobody wants to hear the questionable QC mumble through another speech or see him run the country as badly as he is currently running the Ministry of Works with his acolytes Toggie and Bobo. Mr. Fitzgerald killed any leadership aspirations he may have had with the fuel leak scandal in Marathon. Obie and Fred Mitchell could simply keep dreaming because it's not gonna happen even if Bill #4 passes. However, I disagree and believe the Bahamas should move towards becoming a Republic like some of our Caricom partners. It is time to truly cut the navel string and exist on our own. The QCs could easily change their titles to SCs (Senior Counsel). However, I don't see this breakaway happening anytime soon as our political elite and lawyers love the colonial pomp and circumstance and titles too much to give it up. I call on Mr. Christie to salvage his legacy by passing the torch to Mr. Sears.
