This just shows how disorganized and out-of-touch some of the members of the planning committee are with regards to this rubbish! I'm sure Janet Jackson may be a nice person, but the fact is her career has never recovered from the Nipplegate fiasco at the 2004 Superbowl. In fact she attempted to do a concert tour in the United States in 2008 which got canceled due to poor ticket sales. Of course, they stated at the time it was due to some illness she had, but it was just a roundabout way of accepting the fact that she was not relevant anymore. She has not produced anything notable since then. Now we have some Junkanoo Carnival committee members still living in the 1980s trying to spend $2 million of our (Bahamian people) money for someone that may not even draw a crowd??!! This thing is becoming less Bahamian by the day and is looking like a bad idea. I would rather see our Bahamian artists get that money for real Bahamian cultural offerings. I do not wish failure for this fiasco because it would be $9 million of our money wasted, but I do hope they get it together real fast!
Hey Mr. Wells, please go back into your little hole and don't come back out until you come up with a better BS story that is more believable! Like a popular radio talk host that is crease right up with the PLP recently said, the person that told him to sign the LOI has a office right there on West Bay Street.
A very good article with some valid points. I've always felt that this Public Holiday could have been incorporated into the National Heroes Day Public Holiday. The last thing the Bahamas need is another public holiday, especially one that occurs right after taking 1 - 2 weeks off for Christmas and New Years celebrations. Can't really be good for productivity for our lazy nation and just another added cost for many struggling businesses. With regards to the holiday itself, I like the esteemed authour, always thought that the term 'Majority Rule' does nothing to bring us together as one Nation. Leave it up to the PLP to institute this holiday. It is akin to playing 'Roots' on ZNS right before elections.
I seriously doubt anything will come out of this. When the "powers that be" finds out that it is one of their 'boys', you will never hear anything else about it, just like the LOI affair is currently being pushed under that part of the carpet that is under the bed. In addition, if Ms. Maynard-Gibson is the one investigating we definitely won't be hearing anything else about this. She still hasn't given the Bahamian people a report on her meeting in Europe concerning the webshops and compliance issues like she promised. That too was conveniently swept under the rug and the numbers boys quickly regularized before anyone could say anything. With all the 'death by bail' murders that are ongoing in this country, it baffles me why she even still the Attorney General!
Yep. 'Shame' Gibson is solidifying his support with these Unions for Prime Minister in the future. Obediah W. have the numbers boys, Brave have Ortland Bodie and Flying Fred have.............well he already dun p*$$ everyone off so I don't see him being PM anytime soon.
Looks like a perfect storm is brewing for The Bahamas! VAT, Increased Crime, A Depleted Financial Sector, Dwindling Fish Stocks, A Free Cuba. All of our corrupt practices and greedy ways are eventually gonna catch up with us. I hope the government realizes that they have to learn how to say no to these Unions. We as a country do not have the money to keep overpaying Union members. There is no way BEC workers should be getting retroactive lump sum payments and Xmas bonuses. Bahamians, we are going to have to learn to live within our means. There is also no way The Bahamas will be able to compete with a free Cuba in tourism being a high-priced destination. The experience is just not there! There's hardly any attractions in New Providence, Freeport looks like a run-down town, and the Family Islands lack infrastructure to be totally viable destinations. What we have done is just create all-inclusive resorts that keep tourists on the hotel property. Cuba can have the same thing within a decade and still offer tourists other things to do on their island without getting mugged by some hoodlum. Wake up Bahamas! The South Florida Cubans and businesses already have plans drawn up and ready to go once the Cuban embargo is lifted. Cuba can be a viable competitor in less than a decade.
This is absolutely outrageous!! The Bahamian people should be in an uproar! Never have I seen such foolishness. 'Shame' Gibson has the audacity to be grinning like a Cheshire Cat on ZNS news when they showed the signing of this stupid deal. And yet again Bahamian people will remain as quiet as a mouse over another scandal. Bahamians sure know how to use Vaseline because we keep taking it again and again and again! At this rate, the Politicians might as well just increase their salaries right now.
Preach on Sister! You must be using a jackhammer because you are hitting every nail on the head. Bahamians have been too tolerant of this illegal immigration problem for too long. Now the illegals think they have rights in this country which they are not entitled to. It is unfair to call us (Bahamians) xenophobic or prejudiced simply because we are trying to avoid our Country from being over-run by unwelcome house guests. There are many people here of different nationalities and races (including some Haitians) who have entered the Bahamas the legal way and have blended and contributed tremendously to our Society. There is no way I'm going to continue allowing my tax, and soon-to-be VAT dollars, to support a set of people that don't belong here. All illegals please leave at your earliest opportunity, which is yesterday!
Don't worry VAT will cover the costs, like everything else that the 'gubment' has planned like the upcoming Bahamacare, Junkanoo Carnival, Prime Minister's official residence, new House of Assembly, ministers' salary increases, upgraded Family Island airports etc. Seems like the VAT money is already spent before it is even collected.
Ms. Burrows in theory this sounds like an excellent script description of characters for the next play at the Dundas Theatre, but unfortunately this real life drama is being played out in front of a Bahamian public that is quickly growing weary of self-serving politicians. Frankly, some people are just disgusted at the cesspool that the Bahamas has become. Almost everyday there is a different scandal - Rollins, Wells, PHA corruption, Post Office corruption, NIB corruption, BEC, Gambling Referendum, prisoners dying in police custody, stolen cars being imported, gun charges being dismissed by an Education Minister, Carnival Junkanoo, BAMSI, illegal immigrants moon-walking into the Bahamas everyday, non-payment of taxes and bills by prominent Bahamians, billionaires fighting over Bahamian land, dredging in delicate waters in our islands.........I could go on and on but all of this is being presided over by our clueless but ever so eloquent Puppet Master. But Ms. Burrows, keep up the good work. You are a very good writer and at least you are one of the few that is not blinded by political patronage. Also, Big Up to Candia Dames!!
