In particular, thinking of the folks involved in fields like Digital Strategy, Content Generation, Booking Platforms and the technology behind modern hotel systems.
Zoe Pound has a small following and a "training ground" off Cowpen Road. However their activities here are limited to smuggling and not the violent warfare that one sees on the streets. (Look at the names of the killers and killed -- all Bahamian foundation family names.) Why -- because they are kept in check by the Haitian population who send remittances back to Haiti. The remittances are huge from the Bahamas, and one of the biggest players is Omni Money transfer. They cater almost exclusively to the Haitian population, and although they have nominee ownership, they are managed by a guy who provides financial counselling to Potcake Miller, and who once was arrested for fraud after he was fired from his banking job.
However, the Haitian population keeps Zoe Pound out of the gunplay, because it would ruin the remittance business back to Haiti from the almost 70,000 Haitians in New Providence.
When I first met Owen, I thought that he was a stand-up guy. He was the product of a Canadian university, sat on the board of Doctor's Hospital, performed charity work, funded a fashion show and a pile of other stuff. He has proven himself to be nothing but a low-life thief.
In the financial services, if you use client money in an un-authorized fashion, you are criminally stealing. Plain and simple. In a first world country, the white collar crimes unit of the national police would put your ass in jail.
Here we have had a litany of low-life thieves and criminal companies. We currently have Tillerman who admitted to stealing client monies, and is insolvent, and the regulator still hasn't wound them up. In addition to Bethel, we have had scum like Julian Brown, Alliance, Benchmark, Gibraltar, Warren Davis, Caledonia, Dominion Securities and a raft of others. And do the regulators do anything about it???????? NOOOO. They sit on their asses. These people should be prosecuted and in jail. Apparently its not a crime to steal from clients in the Bahamas if you are in financial services.
It is no wonder that our second pillar of the economy is going down the tubes. The regulators have the same lack of ethics and missing moral compass as the PLP and MPs and anyone in charge of other peoples money. We are proving to the world that we are a nation of liars and tiefs, and totally incapable of displaying any fiduciary responsibility or governing ourselves in a legal, moral fashion.
It has become totally acceptable in Bahamian society to lie and steal and have no moral qualms about it.
UBP is dead. All the white folks have already shipped out a large portion of their money offshore. The last of the UBP generals is Mad Brad the rapist. Or was that his father?
What Thompson in his dotage misses, is the countless people who are robbed at gunpoint, and it doesn't even make the papers.
I was sitting having a libation, and a beguiling young woman joined me. She recounted how a pistol was pressed to her forehead, and her wallet and cell phone were taken. She called the police, and they didn't even come. She had to make her way to the police station. The popo were quite uninterested in her story at the police station.
