I do like the idea of Global Nexus. It has verve, elan and courage of entrepreneurship not commonly seen in the Bahamas. However laying a submarine cable from Canada to the Bahamas will have its issues. For example, there is the ARCOS network in the Caribbean and they are only utilised at 10% of capacity. Global Nexus will have trouble paying back the investment unless they can find a way to link ARCOS dark fiber to South America.

The point about energy is a salient. We will always be behind the 8 ball with energy, unless we generate enough economic activity to offset the imports. Many pundits have pointed out that the island nature of Singapore transmuted itself to prosperity, but they also enjoy oil reserves. We do not. However, if we had a strong merchant and trading economy, or shipping economy, we could generate enough economic offset to counter the cost of energy importation.
A good model is the Cayman Islands where the standard of living is equivalent to Switzerland. They are also hamstrung by energy importation, yet they have enough economic activity to negate that.
Sigh unfortunately our Prime Minister is too stupid to see anything other than tourism anchor projects that actually drives us further behind economically.
As the savant Ray Kurzweil wrote in his book, our brains have evolved a God-spot where it makes us feel numinous or as its definition states: "having a strong religious or spiritual quality; indicating or suggesting the presence of a divinity".
This area in the brain was found by neurophysiologists who discovered that some people with brain lesions in this area have intense religious ecstasy while undergoing an epileptic seizure.
In other words, we have an evolved predilection to religiosity, perhaps as a coping survival mechanism. This can be seen where every primitive tribe, including ours has throughout history, some sort of religious beliefs.
But as usual, we take it too far, and use it to discriminate against people not of our kind, be it religion, sexual orientation, skin colour, etc etc.
Seeing a religious adherent preaching in their robes of authority is no different than the pontifications of a witch doctor with his feathers and finery.
I would think that we would all reach some sort of enlightenment where we realise that religion is used as a control mechanism of the masses against people without the mental machinery to see it for what it's worth.
Progress and enlightenment will show that the Arch-Homophobe is on the wrong side of history, just as the witch doctors, obeah men, and headhunters of yore.
The crazy part is that when the lights finally go out, and the brain stops functioning, you don't really know that you have been had because it is completely over for you, and there is no consciousness to say "Hey, those preachers stole my money and there is no afterlife"!
