When the NIB finally collapses, and the receiver is looking to liquidate investments, he will find that 90% are worthless, just like the loan portfolio at Bank of the Bahamas. That day of reckoning is coming soon. The government owes NIB over $1 billion in unfunded contributions that it hasn't paid up.
I have to laugh the name Valentine Grimes. He was caught with a suitcase full of ballots before an election and said they were "practice ballots". There should be a public move afoot to name him Valentine Grimey.
Ingraham has lost his mojo, because his experience has taught him that the majority of the Bahamian electorate are as enlightened as a bunch of slugs. They will sell their vote, re-elect thugs and tiefs, and tolerate the smelly bottom-feeders if they just get a little crumb that falls from the table.
Ingraham knew what to do. He tried to diversify the economy with his Third Pillar, eCommerce manifesto for the Bahamas. He tried to introduce constitutional equality for women and the PLP effectively campaigned against him by inflaming the sheeple and slugs with a dribble of filthy lucre and high-sounding words that they did not understand. He moved heaven and earth with innovative legislation to remove the OECD blacklisting. He knew that the tax haven concept was dying.
When Ingraham lost the referendum and the election, he knew that he had to lower his agenda to accommodate the lowest common denominator, and that is how he played his last term.
If the Bahamas ultimately survives, and gets to a better place than the banana republic it is, then history will be a harsh judge of the PLP. Enlightened Bahamians will rename the airport, own up to the criminal history of successive PLP governments and the names so revered by odious PLP government of today, will be consigned to slime from which they arose.
There is enough external evidence for the historians to counteract the lies and propaganda of the PLP, and perhaps when truth is no longer a savage prisoner and victim of Bahamian life, history will recognise that Hubert Alexander Ingraham has been the finest prime minister that the Bahamas has had to this date. Perry Christie will be seen as the inferior human being that he is.
Million dollars - hah! In Nassau an ounce goes for as low as $80 and the top shelf stuff goes for around $300 an ounce. BC Bud hydroponic from Canada is higher. Haitian stuff is cheaper, and Columbian stuff goes to about $450 an ounce. The street value of these 100 pounds is about $480,000. I know this because all of my Family Islands cousins, PLP supporters all, used to run drugs for a living (with the odd bit of fishing thrown in). Every time there was nothing but conch and coconut in the fridge, it was time to haul square grouper.
It's not the Haitians. DonAnthony had it right. It is Bahamians using stolen boats to dump square grouper in the water at the 12 mile limit off Florida to be picked up by "fishing" boats that have private jetties on the panhandle.
This is only the beginning of the "reputational risk" for CIBC First Caribbean. They can't get rid of the skeletons in their closet, so they better teach them to dance.
I know the banker, and there was full understanding as to why the trip to New York was necessary -- to avoid the US banking system. It was a deliberate compliance failure and transgression -- looking the other way to service the business.
Not to worry. The crime wave will soon stop. Sharia Law coming to the Bahamas. Victims get to exact revenge. (Wait a minute, isn't that what is fueling this crime spree?). Looking forward to stoning adulterers myself.
