lolol.. Excellent comment and it's hard to think of anything else to add. They've twisted the statistics, people are looking over their shoulders everytime they leave the house, barring up their doors and staying in after dark. Corruption reigns up high so no doubt the small man will do what he pleases because he can't be stopped !
criminals are robbing you left and right, i dont want to tote my important documents like that each and everyday. glad they are doing something but just hope they go about it the right way and in a humane manner.
This is the second time brave has said something about the fact that we're "all in this together"; .when his aide was shot before he said "no one is safe". DUH ! no one was ever safe... now K. major from the house says he does not feel safe anymore or protected. So how you think all these innocent people being robbed, raped and murdered have been feeling all these years?! c'mon man , be real. it's a little fishy to me------first his aide now these men in their house...hmmm..sounds liek someone trying to send him a msg.
I agree, protocols need to be reviewed for the public in general. There is always a high level of ppanic when something of this nature happens to a high ranking official. While I understand why that might be, it doesn't change the fact that everyday civilians are suffering everyday.
They can talk until they're blue in the face; if they don't stop the corruption and criminals already in charge, there's no way crime will cease for the rest of us. If they're not criminials themselves, they were put in power by criminals that the bribed. This is not difficult to understand-- they have to protect their own first. No point bringing out strict and stringent law enforcement because then all the dirty laundry comes out. Maybe not all are crooked but unfortunately the innocent suffer in this case.
Don't expect crime to change unless the whole moral fabric of society is improved and criminals are weeded out of high ranking positions. Sad but true.....
I hope Rory is a troll- I hope his views really aren't as stupid and nasty as they come across in this forum. He makes no attempt to be considerate or focus on the issues at hand in a constructive way-- I am not saying I have a problem with his opposition to any particular issue, it is snarly and degrading language that is a problem. I'm assuming he is just looking to rile everyone up- please excuse him.
Dr. Bizzell, No one is saying that the Bahamian vets are not capable of spaying and neutering pets or providing excellent care and treatment to animals. The question here has to do with volume- the high number of stray animals is astounding as I'm sure you realize having worked and lived in the Bahamas for so long. Over the years I've had many great experiences with your practice and I've been pleased with the care given. Coming from a family of animal lovers, and having recently started my own animal family with my husband, I grew up rescuing strays off the streets with my parents and today as an adult, I do the same thing. But the animal lovers in this town are few and far in between and we NEED help. As Laura noted, why did you guys agree so far ahead only to crumble at the last minute. What difference does it make whether the help is Bahamian or not ? Why not accept this help for now and let's put down the swords, then once the volume has decreased a bit, we can go on with the steady local clinics as you detailed before. But don't you agree that this initial help is in good faith and works towards the original goal ? Or is that not your goal any longer? You of all people know how quickly animals reproduce; to continue on a slow trickle path of spays and neuters will only cost the community MORE in the long run. A high volume clinic gives us a way to get a head-start on the control of the situation, bringing you , the vets, tons of good press. Of course these surgeries don't come for free- but terms were agreed to and numbers were worked out....Why now the sudden change ?
Spay and neuter is the only proven way. Many studies show that simply killing these animals is not the answer-more only move in to fill the void where other packs and colonies once were. Through educational outreach and spay and neuter, populations die off naturally and in a humane manner. Let us not forget that this overpopulation is first and foremost a people problem. These were originally domestic animals that bred at will and have been turned to the streets with nowhere to go. by educating the public and spaying and neutering, we encourage more responsible pet ownership in a cleaner and safer environment.
@ ThisisOurs, I completely agree. I have dealt with Dr. Bizzell before, as well as his associates at his practice, along with other vets on the island with never a doubt of their skills or professionalism. I have never had the experience of seeing Dr. Johnson but have heard excellent things about her too, from more than one person who were very pleased with the care she extended to their animals. I don't want to speak for anyone else, but I don't believe the concern here has anything to do with questioning the vets' skills.
The issue here is that the problem is out of control. High volume spay and neuter campaigns at low cost have been proven to work and aid significantly in putting a cap on the problem. Many animal rights groups such as Pink Potcake, Baark etc work hard all year round to spay and neuter stray dogs/ cats on their own time. This cannot be done without the help of local vets and for that, us volunteers are hugely grateful. But doing little by little throughout the year is simply a band-aid approach as many of us have full time jobs and time is limited.
Operation Potcake has happened once before and amazing and successful results were seen. It is not like the vets did not know what they were getting into this time around, having participated last year. If they had any doubts, they should have been communicated up front and early on before out -of-town volunteers had already gone out of their way to arrange travel and accomadation plans. It is simply bad form for the vets to handle the situation as they did. A commitment like this is a large one and no doubt the volunteers and op potcake organizers appreciate the time and effort vets put into such an event-- but confirmation should never have been given only to back out at the last moment. They knew this event was a charitable one from the get go and profits were not expected to be made. If they didn't think they could afford to participate, they should have given notice right away.
Furthermore, the logic behind the decision is simply beyond me. If your #1 concern is for the animals who suffer daily with no voice, then why not accept the help being offered from the foreign vets and assistants? I am sure the bahamian vets would be looked on with great admiration for opening their arms to guests who are willing to help us with this massive problem.
For once , I agree with you. Teach a man to fish.............. that's a lot of money and while the homes may need it- we need to think about the long term benefits of these projects.

On Operation Potcake has been cancelled following opposition from local vets. How do you think the spay and neuter programme should be run?
