Foreign or local if they both get the same treatment. The Bahamas is one of the leading financisl centres in the world and has dozens of top notch bankers, in senoor positions in many leading banks, i know of a few vice presidents right hre in Nassau who run back a d forth yo NewYork etc. We have devised structures and continue to that have served well until govt gets into it.. We have also trained many foreign bankers who get paid more an move to senior roles, we have provided papers 20 uears ago and designed systems on what we ane now seeing today. Bahamas was and still is at the top og the game like Cayman before the Caribbean and sre continuing to change. Not cause dey is senior mean dey is saying da ting correctly, like fer instamce ROyal was one first bank to com 1900s but den it took Sir Etienne an company to correct what plenty been doin wrong like black people coulfnt go on dem cas dey black. We know why some say what ...but then in todays trib Bus headline where banker says and the 3 bullet points. Now da youth education story das ean hole next ting you startin.
The question must be asked why was noone ever charged with fraudulent documents since Indepemdence??.....or even bribery??.....or even fake marriages....??......or deceiving the Bahsmian authorities.....??....or hiring illegals...???.....or not payingNIB for the illehals working....??....Unless of course all this just started with Mr.Symonette noticing something.
..."The mortgage lending infrastructure, and lending infrastructure in general in this country needs to improve so that we can actually open up the books."... .......actually.....these infrastructure are currently 'dictated' in the Bahamas by the mortgage lenders themselves including selection of Bank Approved Appraisers list, Bank Approved lawyers, Bank Approved legal documents with iron clad covenants and legal teams to pursue debtors even after mortgaged property is sold for all interest, costs recovered etc inJugment, and the rest of course respective Bank Approved Terms and Conditions bank accountants, mathematical ratios, mortgage insurances, indemnity insurances, analyses, amortizations etc. Banks are geared to make maximum profits and officers from loan officers are now also Sales officers with QUOTAS to meet to get pay increase, bonuses, trips etc set by headoffices.
@ MadHatter, very valid point on democracy on representation of the people. We need a serious look on what happens when you have a lopsided parlianent also as to whether those with the smaller side can bring sufficient debate to balance to the overwhelming side. We need to also look at island develppment versus nassau centric. Many Bahamians vote for ghe MP but then they are taken over by toeing the party line, team player etc. Regardless which party is favoured it must be fair that all citizens get full representation.
They are expected to be extremely stretched since the decline has been going of for years and having to maintain a depopulated area with so many repossessed homes, closed businesses and the population shifted to Nassau. By now GrandBahamiams have settled in Nassau, kids in schools and restarted new lives. Perhaps what the govt should do is to offer a 99 year lease to a capable developer to start another city outside Freeport.
...sorry Economist, govt Centrsl Bank cannot vwarn you because they are essentially the same. Hundreds of millions can be poured in to bail it out despite assets value is less than half., even the Resolve agency head James Smith pointed it out!...... Just check on the buy snd sell Bisx orders.
Employment statisyics have yo be up cause there are dozens of persons cleaning streets begs the question if Bahamians can clean streets then why not as gardeners, handymen, maids? Or are they being paid less?
The govt apart from looking abroad should also look at how many bank tellers have masters degrees, bachelors, law degrees, criminalist ,engineer, ddgree, etcetc starting salary 18k pa.
Here we go again with the foreign guy setting policies in the foreign headofgice visiting the colony. What a bunch of crap!!!...middle an lower class Bahamians...affluent...BahamianCreditBureau? Mudda sic dred didnt someone mention that thats what a bank analysis does?? ..a banker can analyze invome, budget anslysis loans and tell you what you should have left over and balance sheet can support data....simple what you put into your pocket should still be thers less what you take out or you pocket gat hole..aint notin imperfect about dat ...trying to pull wool pver people eyes to cover us disaster fron aggressive lending....and putting one over on govt....why RBC should be committed yo this nation if it was not committed to its own success.....well thats true since the authorities have not done investigations into lending policies of these same banks leaving Bahamians eid domev 600m in bad loans and proof is now same banks change policies that few remaining Bzhamians can qualify!! Spending millions yo tigthten up policies sure tells you something dey been doing wrong.. We need a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as in the United States and a United Kingdom Banking ConsumerProtection and Competition in the Banking sector!!!
Bank policies are set by the bank itself and bank along with its best lawyers, accounntkants hires or pays for what it gets. simple.
For instance in Tribune article Wednesday, 17th January, 2018 by Nico Scavella '"Clerk gave bank more than her annual salary" the article has the annual salary as $32,310 and the portion that relates a FINCO mortgage of some $104,500 with monthly payments of $1295.92 Gross? monthly salary 32,310/12 =2,692.50 Now with average debt service ratio of 45% this case this would be 1295/2,692.5= 48% and this does not even add other mandatory deductions like NIB which would make debt service ratio even higher! and raise concerns over the numbers involved. This is just an observation on general bank policies and from figures mentioned in the article. All falls back on how muvh yru are willing to spend so dont blame Bahaiams education at the bottom, blame top mansgement and your colleagues in their fancy offices.
