Regardless what nasty dirt my fellow Bahamians want to throw on The Hon. George Smith, he had enough self respect to resign when he was accused.
And to those who want to accuse him of "profiting from the drug trade," suffice to say that it is not facts...
No matter what side of the aisle you were on, George was always an accomidating person, full of knowledge and jokes that he shared with everyone.
He was a simple man, and love the Bahamas, especially his birthplace of Exuma.
He was one of the principals of Majority Rule in The Bahamas, and also Independence.
It is ironic that shortly before his passing, his last official assignment was to chair the upcoming Independence celebration. Rest in peace, George, your work is done here.....

Wow..
My name is William Lee. I am from Nassau, Bahamas but now live in Ocala Flordia. At one time I was the Vice President of the BGF and I remember Taneka and I teamed up a few times to play in our local tournaments, (and did quite well in some, thanks to her golfing skills and my high handicap!) I think she was around 14-15 then. I also remember having some conversations with her about life, her future and how things were going for a young Bahamian female golfer. At one point, I lost touch with her after awhile, only to find out that she was in Pensacola Florida in college.
I remember her as ALWAYS being VERY polite and NEVER saying a word when I had the (often) errant shot when we played together.
Reading this article renews my faith in the younger generation and also makes me feel SO proud as to being a small part in her life during her formative years..

How can you not want to get a vaccine or wear a mask, yet be against abortion?
Both say it's their rights to their bodies...

This deal is SO wrong for ANY Island Nation.
A German friend once told me, in his country, if there was an Island Nation, any company allowed to set up shop on the island would be given ONE year leases (only) so that at any time, if necessary, the Nation could take the land back, and/or increase rents when and where necessary. Not only would this provide the needed jobs but despite the "sabre rattling" by the foreign company wanting to open a business, they (or their competition,) would come in as the land/Nation is so desirable for their business. To help with investment cost, the company would have some leeway (say) the first 3-4 years, to recoup their investment costs back so they would be safe all around. He said NEVER sell land OR give LONG term leases to foreigners if you Nation is made up of islands.... I totally agree!

You are right. In an island nation, land is PRIME commodity and it's main asset...

Ivan was a man both loved and loathed by The Bahamian pseople..
But his paper was compelling and frank, and people use to line up to buy (or borrow) the weekly issue when it came out...
One must say that he stood up for his beliefs and ideals and it is surprising to find out (just now) that he was also a professional cricketeer...
And his father seemed to be quite a man as well, flying missions in WW ll for England.
RIP Ivan, you (and your editorials) will be missed
