If the urgency is so grave then I presume the government will cancel LNG plants, permits for new oil refineries and commit the Bahamas to 100% renewable power by 2030? (all things within the Bahamas power to do)
Instead of trying to reassemble things from damage, what about not continuing to cause the climate change that drives these monster storms to become bigger and more impactful?
Can we still continue to move forward with LNG and brand new refineries and more cruise ship terminals when its clear this will all contribute to more climate change?
We need a strategic reserve of mobile trailers that can go from island to island to provide temporary housing while people rebuild.
And a permanent huricane reserve fund sales tax of say 2.5% to provide for disaster funding with funds administered by third parties so they are disaster relief only and not for general revenues with public accounts given annually.
And finally where is the talk of us getting off the fossil fuels that are driving all of these destructive storms to begin with?
Huricanes just get worse, and in 10-20 years there's Category 7 storms. Followed by Cat8 storms.
So yes, code revamp is required but also is a truely viable plan to get off of fossil fuels.
So will we still build new LNG plants or not? Cause if you do, you will never win the code upgrade catch up game! Why the silence on the new LNG plants from our government in the wake of Dorian? Is climate only connected to storms when we are asking others to take action?
If climate change made Dorian basically the worst ever storm - Cat6, it makes sense to build ever more fossil fuel infrastructure and lets have even worse and bigger storms?!
So it matters not who wrote what environmental plan, a refinery just makes more fossil fuels ! (this is not complicated)
Clearly any logical plan would have all permits cancelled for anything new on the fossil fuel front. Oban, we are happy to have you announce renewable power projects however with your funds.
Maybe yet another reason we need to get off of fossil fuels? Are we going to go solar and ditch fossil fuels or finally have a real plan to stop building fossil fuel plants and address climate change?
The PM has yet to speak on if this climate caused disaster is going to lead to a rethink of plans to build new LNG plants with decade long lifespans and lock us into ever more climate change.
Why not just simply build out distributed solar on the top of all rebuilt structures in North Abaco? Then no need to rebuild all the power poles and then outcome will be green power (where we need to go in any event). Why rebuild the type of power the world needs to get off (fossil fuels) when you have a chance to go from scratch?
In the wake of seeing what climate change does to the Bahamas will we finally abandon plans to build brand new LNG plants and go with solar?
Good to see disaster recovery is at the mercy of what the cruise lines decide to donate.
This would have been better if it was a larger land based hotel industr instead where a Parliament duly elected could tax as required for natural disasters.
If we are going to keep cruise ships around tho I move a hurriacane recovery levy and future huircane contiengecy levy be charged per visitor. I don't think 2 million is gonna cover much here folks.
Can I ask if you advocated selling BEC years ago for us all to have avoided the need for its SPV? Just curious if you would have been for a path which would have been for a better outcome.

Good news. Is an achievement. But the debt is still growing. Taxes going up has done its part. So what about spending?
When will BEC be sold off so it can not further impact the debt in anyway?
